Job Description

Major Function:

Skilled technical work in the installation and maintenance of traffic signal equipment

Illustrative Duties:

Performs construction, fabrication, and repair tasks and procedures necessary to install and maintain all computerized traffic signal control hardware including vehicle detection. Performs preventative maintenance on and installs all types of traffic control and signal equipment including Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) hardware and software. Analyzes, tests and repairs all types of signal equipment in the shop and the field. Assists in the installation of concrete signal poles and span cable. Cuts, threads and mounts conduit. Assembles equipment in preparation for installation. Investigates and repairs reported traffic signal problems. Assists in flagging traffic and signing work zone. Repair roadway lighting. May perform monitoring and troubleshooting activities within the Traffic Management Center (TMC).

Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge Abilities and Skills:

Knowledge of the methods, practices, techniques and materials related to the electrical, electronics and traffic signal trade. Ability to read and work from plans and schematics. Ability to drive, operate and maintain hydraulic bucket truck or lift platform truck. Ability to work at heights up to fifty (50) feet. Ability to use tools and equipment of the electrical and electronics trade as used in this position. Ability to learn applicable occupational hazards and safety precautions. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to make independent decisions. Ability to read road maps. Ability to read and write. Ability to complete forms and records. Ability to perform job duties in all weather conditions.

Ability to see, and hear at a normal level. Ability to ambulate independently, bend, stoop, sit, and stand. Must be able to push, pull, lift or carry materials of five (5) pounds or greater with the maximum weight being forty five (45) pounds.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Traffic Signal Tech I

Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and possess certification in Safety in the Work Zone and Level 1 Traffic Signal Technician as issued by the IMSA- International Municipal Signal Association,

or:

Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and demonstrate knowledge of basic electronics and/or electricity (documented by college, military or trade school certificate). Must acquire certification in Safety in the Work Zone and Level 1 Traffic Signal Technician as issued by the IMSA- International Municipal Signal Association within one (1) year of employment if employed in a “trainee status”. Failure to obtain this certification within one (1) year of employment may result in termination of employment.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver’s license at the time of employment. Must possess or obtain a valid Florida Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License within one (1) month of employment within this classification.

A comparable amount of training and related experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications with the exception of the required licensure and certifications


Traffic Signal Tech II:

Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and possess a Level II Traffic Signal Certificate (Technician or Electrician option) as issued by the IMSAInternational Municipal Signal Association

or:

must have a minimum of two (2) years experience in traffic signal operations including completion of a certified training program in electronics. Must obtain a Level II Traffic Signal Certificate (Technician or Electrician option) as issued by the IMSA- International Municipal Signal Association within six (6) months of employment.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver’s license at the time of employment. Must possess or obtain a valid Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License within one (1) month of employment within this classification.

A comparable amount of training and related experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications with the exception of the required licensure and certifications.


Special Requirement:

Must perform after hour call-out in emergency and on rotational basis. Must have a home telephone at the time of employment as employee is subject to call for emergencies.

Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday or Tuesday -Friday 7:00 AM-5:30PM work schedule -May Change Due To Business Needs

Rate of Pay:

Traffic Signal Technician I: $14.98 per hour (Non Exempt)

Traffic Signal Technician II: $16.34 per hour (Non Exempt)
