Emergency Room Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Emergency job responsibilities:

  • The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMH-NP) will practice in a high-volume emergency setting providing healthcare management to patients diagnosed with psychiatric disorders including substance use disorders. 
  • The PMH-NP promotes mental health through the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of behavioral problems, mental disorders, and comorbid conditions across the lifespan. 
  • The care of these patients is coordinated with the supervising physician, patient, family and other health care professionals in the inpatient or outpatient area. 
  • The PMH-NP will follow Scope & Standards of Practice set forth by the American Psychiatric Nurse Association (APNA) and International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses (ISPN) with approval from American Nurses Association (ANA).
  • The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing specialized mental health care under the supervision of the Clinical Director of Psychiatry and the Emergency Department. 
  • The duties and responsibilities entail seeing patients in the ED as well as seeing patients throughout the hospital as a consultant. 
  • Candidates must be comfortable with the interface between medical and psychiatric illnesses and be able to prescribe treatment accordingly. 
  • Duties will include the evaluation and treatment of patients including but not limited to performing initial and follow up psychiatric assessments ; conduct in-depth interviews with patients to develop a plan of care; assists in the coordination of appropriate follow up care, referrals and case management; initiating, renewing and changing medications ; ordering routine laboratory, radiological, and diagnostic tests and providing initial interpretations of results; providing education and training to the patient and family as necessary; serve as a resource in evaluation and management of psychiatric disorders for primary care staff in the ED and other services. Provides clinical leadership for the Psychiatric consult service.

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner candidates for the Emergency Room must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Strongly prefer someone with current CA license; if does not have current CA license, prefer candidate with CA licensure in process. 
  • Candidate with previous experience, preferably 5 years as a nurse practitioner in a mental health field. 
  • Candidate with experience in an acute care setting such as ER or crisis clinic. 
  • Someone who is familiar with CA and this particular area is interested in living in Monterey or willing to relocate.
