The Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership (CAPAL) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, non-partisan educational organization dedicated to building leadership and public policy knowledge within the Asian Pacific American (APA) community. Its mission is to promote APA interests and success in public service careers, to provide information and education on policy issues affecting the APA community, and to serve the APA community at-large.

CAPAL's Public Service Scholarship Program awards scholarships of $3,500 undergraduate or graduate students serving in unpaid public service internships (nonprofit or government) this summer in the Washington, DC metropolitan region. Recipients of the CAPAL scholarships are responsible for securing their own public service internships. Students will be considered based on financial need and will be required to disclose other funding sources received. 

  

The Public Service Scholarships are intended to enable outstanding students with leadership potential to work full-time and learn about ways to influence public policy in their local communities and the APA community. The scholarship program includes participation in CAPAL's Washington Leadership Program, a weekly summer seminar series, and to implement a Community Action Project with their peers.


The CAPAL-MAASU Public Service Scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate student enrolled at a school that is a member of the Midwest Asian American Students Union (MAASU) or a school located in the following Midwestern states: CO, IL, IN, IA, KS, MI, MN, MO, NE, ND, OH, OK, SD, and WI. All eligible scholarship applicants will be considered for the CAPAL-MAASU scholarship.

Qualifications

Demonstrated commitment to public service, including service to the Asian Pacific American community; GPA of 3.0 or higher. All current students and all majors are welcome to apply.

In describing your previous educational, community, and professional experiences, tell us how you have demonstrated leadership and how your past experiences have influenced your long-term career goals. How will your summer internship experience advance these goals, and how will you use the experiences and knowledge gained this summer to better the APA community and your local community? Please limit your statement to 750 words or less. 

4. Letter of Recommendation: Please upload a scanned and signed letter that includes the recommender's contact information. Letters may also be sent to [email protected]. If your letter will be sent by email, please make sure your recommender puts your name is in the subject line of the email. 

5. Statement of Financial Need: Please give a brief statement of your financial need. List sources of income for the 2014 summer, including internship stipends, if any. Please provide a list of 
all loans, grants, scholarships and other sources of financial aid that you received for the 2013-2014 academic year.

 

Final deadline is Friday, March 14. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
