Simulation Support Specialist

Job Description

The Simulation Support Specialist is a staff position without teaching responsibility that will assist the Director of Nursing Laboratories with day to day management and coordination of the School of Nursing’s teaching lab.  Duties will support the director and faculty in enhancing student clinical skills by facilitating patient simulation in a variety of lab based practice settings.  The Simulation Support Specialist will work closely with the Director/Faculty and assist in creating learning experiences within the teaching labs that are consistent with faculty direction, student needs, and course/program outcomes.  The goal of this position is to provide student experiences that will simulate actual patient care and enable students to realistically practice essential nursing skills.  The Simulation Support Specialist will assist with inventory management and procurement of supplies for all practice modules, the preparation of the laboratories for teaching of directed modules, and the maintenance of all equipment in the labs.

 

Administrative & Logistical Support

  • Set-up and breakdown equipment and materials for scheduled demonstrations and lab exercises
  • Manage inventory, procurement, stocking and the use of lab supplies, linens, and equipment including tracking of borrowed supplies and equipment
  • Budget management and verification of delivery accuracy 

 

Instructional & Faculty/ Student Support

  • Support faculty as they work with students in the lab.  Support scholarly activities, including research, student and faculty surveys, presentations and quality improvement projects
  • Assist in the evaluation of current technologies used by the SON and the teaching lab.  Assist in the research and evaluation of new technologies that might be useful in the teaching lab.
  • Coordinate with and assist nursing faculty and other University faculty/staff as assigned in the preparation of simulation presentations for various audiences to support nursing and interprofessional education activities. 
  • Schedule and conduct tours of the Patient Simulation Lab for visitors and potential students.
  • Collaborate with faculty at all levels to create proposals for the expansion of simulation to enhance the quality of student learning.

 

Technical Support

  • Deploy technical tools and equipment such as high fidelity human simulators, task trainers, manikins, and other computer-related hardware and software used to educate students to develop nursing judgment, skills proficiency, and positive patient safety practices.
  • Evaluate, implement, and maintain technical lab equipment
  • Evaluate, install, configure and maintain software to support labs activities
  • Develop and maintain web materials to support lab activities
  • Provide support for A/V capture and delivery of lab sessions and scenarios

  • Will limit access to protected health information (PHI) and student protected information to the information reasonable necessary to do the job.
  • Will share information only on a need to know basis for work purposes.

 

Non-Essential Duties

  • Placing and/or responding to calls that can be handled by other department personnel.
  • Clerical handling of department reports and forms.
  • Courier functions. 
  • Procurement of supplies.
  • Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department goals

Qualifications

  • Passion for working in the educational environment with traditional and adult students
  • Commitment to professional development and maintenance of professional credentials
  • Ability to connect with students at all levels of proficiency
  • Ability to make connections across disciplines
  • Knowledge of pedagogical developments in simulation and psychomotor skill development.
  • College degree in computer related field or in nursing (associate required, baccalaureate preferred)
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively
  • Experience in both nursing and computer fields
  • Previous experience in a teaching lab environment operating simulation mannequins and related simulation equipment including scenario programming preferred


Physical Requirements

  • Visual Abilities:  Must be able to read reports, create presentations and use a computer system.
  • Hearing:   Must be able to hear well enough to communicate with co-workers, vendors, and students.
  • Dexterity, Grasping, Feeling: Must be able to write, type and use the telephone, copier, and computer systems. Must have fine motor skills sufficient to manipulate various medical equipment such as syringes etc.
  • Mobility:  Must be able to open files and operate office machines; mobility between departments and to attend meetings across campus.
  • Talking:  Must be able to frequently convey detailed or important instructions and ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Lifting, Pulling, Pushing: Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds for force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Additional Information

  • Work in simulated or actual clinical environments, contact with employees, students, parents, service providers and vendors
  • Work has deadlines, multiple interruptions, high volume and may be stressful at times
