Job Description

Summary: The Director of the Preyer Honors Programs and Initiatives for Academic Excellence is responsible for the oversight, implementation, and assessment of programs that support the recruitment and success of high-achieving undergraduate students.  The Director will work closely with faculty, staff, and administrators across campus to strengthen the high-achieving student profile, enhance student success, and improve post-graduation outcomes.  This is a full-time, 12-month administrative position reporting directly to the Assistant Provost for University Programs. This position is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible to earn overtime pay for hours worked above 40 in a single work week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
•    Designing initiatives that enhance the success and retention of high-achieving students
•    Creating a set of experiences for students awarded Queens Presidential Scholarships that help build community among that group, providing enhanced opportunities for them on and off campus 
•    Serving as the University liaison for competitive national scholarship programs, such as Fulbright, Rhodes, Marshall and Goldwater, and working closely with students interested in applying for such opportunities
•    Serving as a mentor and resource for high-achieving students
•    Supporting the Chair of the Academic Honors Program in the delivery of that program’s curricular and co-curricular activities
•    Acting as the advisor for the University’s chapter of Mortar Board honor society and helping provide general oversight for other academic honor societies as needed
•    Coordinating Marking Excellence, an annual undergraduate research and creative work campus showcase, in partnership with a faculty planning committee
•    Acting as a resource for campus constituencies, programs, and offices whose responsibilities relate to high-achieving recruitment, retention, and success.  
•    Assessing programs and initiatives for effectiveness
•    Representing high-achieving student initiatives to internal and external constituencies as needed

Non-Essential Duties:
•    Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department and university needs.

Qualifications

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills Required:
•    Master’s degree in higher education administration, counseling, coaching, or related field
•    At least 3 years direct experience or equivalent working with undergraduate student success programs
•    Demonstrated commitment to student development and passion for working with diverse undergraduate populations
•    Ability to work independently and as a member of team
•    Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills and ability to quickly establish and maintain strong rapport with campus constituents
•    Solid problem-solving skills, critical thinking and the ability to analyze components and arrive at a logical course of action while knowing when to ask for assistance or direction
•    Demonstrated organization and follow-up and follow-through skills to ensure completion of goals and objectives in specified timeframe
•    Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks and demands.
•    Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, presentation, teaching)
•    Experience working closely with students applying for competitive national scholarship programs
•    Experience serving as a mentor and resource for high-achieving students
•    Experience serving as an advisor for on-campus organizations is preferred (example: as Queens’ Mortar Board honor society 
•    Prior budget management experience
•    Strong Microsoft Office software skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point)

•    Lifting, Pulling, Pushing: Exert up to 40 pounds for force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects – 50‐75% of the time.
•    Cognitive/Emotional: Ability to critically think and concentrate. Must be able to respond quickly to changes in conditions – 75‐100% of the time.
 

Work Conditions
•    Work in classroom, laboratory and office environment, involving contact with students, faculty, staff, service providers and vendors.
•    Work has deadlines, multiple interruptions, high volume and may be stressful at times.
