Job Description

Summary: The part-time driver is responsible for safely and securely transporting students, athletes, faculty and staff to and from remote events such as athletic matches and student field trips.  This is a casual/on-call position that is suitable for individuals interested in working a flexible schedule of anywhere from 0 to 25 hours a week, based on university needs. Reports to the Parking & Transportation Coordinator within the university’s Public Safety and Campus Police department.

This position is not exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is eligible to earn overtime pay for hours worked above 40 in a single work week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:  
•    Safely operate motor vehicles in strict compliance with university policies, directives, and procedures and all Federal and North Carolina traffic laws and regulations;  includes using proper defensive driving techniques at all times
•    Always ensure the absolute safety of riders
•    Provide excellent customer service to riders, responding appropriately to requests and special needs
•    Accurately track, record and report ridership information requested by the supervisor in a timely manner
•    Proactively communicate to supervisor all issues, concerns and opportunities in a timely manner
•    Perform inspection of vehicle for mechanical problems prior to beginning driving assignment. Includes conducting an external/internal visual inspection of the vehicle and testing all equipment, operating/safety devices, and controls for use while in service. Conduct an internal visual inspection at the end of service to collect and turn-in lost items.
•    Complete and submit timely, legible and accurate accident and incident reports 
•    Maintain confidentiality of riders and university information

Non-Essential Duties
•    Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department and university needs.

Qualifications

Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required
•    Minimum of two years verifiable driving experience in a similar position
•    Minimum of two years of clean Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) record; no accidents or citations; no DUI or DWI or reckless driving convictions in the past 5 years
•    Valid, unrestricted North Carolina driver’s license 
•    Willingness to work a variable schedule that changes frequently to meet the university’s needs. Ability and willingness to work unusual hours, split shifts, weekends, and holidays as required
•    Ability to read, write, and speak English.  Ability to tell time and keep a timely schedule
•    Ability to use GPS equipment and read and understand maps and time tables (includes determining directions and following a mapped-out route)
•    Ability to use prudent judgment and common sense in making quick, safe decisions with minimal supervision and adapt to changing operating environments
•    Willingness to accurately track, record and report ridership information requested by the supervisor
•    History of satisfactory attendance, which includes the ability to report to work in a punctual manner
•    Ability to interact with passengers in a courteous, professional manner. This includes providing excellent customer service by attending to the needs of a diverse customer base in a sensitive manner
•    Ability to always maintain professional composure, including while under stress 
•    Proven ability to maintain confidentiality
•    High school diploma, GED or an equivalent combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics consistent with required qualifications 

Physical Requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation)
•    Visual Abilities:  Read reports, create presentations and use a computer system.
•    Hearing:   Hear well enough to communicate with co-workers, faculty, staff, students, parents and vendors.
•    Dexterity, Grasping, Feeling: Write, type and use the telephone, copier, and computer systems.
•    Mobility:  Open files and operate office machines; move between departments and attend meetings across campus.
•    Talking:  Frequently convey detailed or important instructions and ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
•    Lifting, Pulling, Pushing: Exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
•    Cognitive/Emotional: Ability to critically think and concentrate. Must be able to respond quickly to changes in conditions – 75‐100% of the time.

Work Conditions
•    Work in vehicle, involving contact with faculty, staff, students, parents, service providers and vendors.
•    Work has deadlines and may be moderately stressful at times.
•    Work requires travel, evening hours, split shifts and occasional overnight travel.
