FACULTY: Assistant Professor, Biology (tenure-track)

Job Description

Summary:  The College of Arts and Sciences at Queens University of Charlotte invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Biology. This position offers the opportunity to join a collaborative group of STEM faculty in the Biology & Chemistry Department who emphasize high-quality teaching through the use of practices such as course-embedded research, writing intensive experiences, and gamification. We support our faculty in developing a personalized teacher-scholar approach to help them succeed in their faculty role. The faculty in the Biology & Chemistry department also frequently participate in the John Belk International Program, running courses that entail short-term study abroad trips with students. This position will begin in August 2024.

This position is for a Biologist trained in the area of population or landscape genetics. The selected candidate will have responsibilities for teaching 4-5 courses per year in introductory Biology, genetics, writing-intensive courses, and/or General Education “science and society” courses. Additionally, there are opportunities to develop innovative, upper-level courses that complement and diversify current offerings and contribute to the growth of the Biology and potentially the Conservation Biology program, as well as our interdisciplinary data analytics program.  

This position is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Essential Experience, Knowledge and Skills

  • A PhD in biology with a focus in population or landscape genetics from a regionally accredited institution
  • Evidence of high-quality teaching effectiveness as either a teaching assistant or instructor of record
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct primary research in area(s) of expertise resulting in peer-reviewed scholarship
  • Commitment to cultivating STEM learning environments that foster a sense of belonging for all students

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Other duties may be assigned as needed to meet department, college, and university goals.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience using active learning or other techniques to engage students in the classroom 
  • Record of scholarly activity and an interest in working collaboratively within or outside the sciences 
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate students in research activities inside and/or outside the classroom 

Queens is pursuing a multidisciplinary data analytics initiative to strengthen students' quantitative skills, expand opportunities for students and faculty to engage in data science, and create community partnerships in the Charlotte area to use data to generate insights and solve problems. The ability to contribute to this strategic initiative through any or all following is desirable: domain expertise, experience using statistical software and programming languages, discipline specific and general quantitative methods, and relevant experience creating similar high-impact educational opportunities.
