Academic Advisor (Hayworth)

The Academic Advisor is the professional advisor to the adult undergraduate student
population of the Hayworth School. This position works closely with the university’s supplemental Advising Office housed within the Center for Student Success including contributing to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive plan for undergraduate advising grounded in best practices. The advisor serves as a crucial link between adult degree students and the support services provided by the university. This is a full time position jointly reporting to the Dean of the Hayworth School and the Director of the Academic Advising Office.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Provide supplemental academic advising to a caseload of adult undergraduate students on topics, including but not limited to, major exploration, general education, academic requirements, campus resources and institutional policies and procedures when needed.
- Work closely with the Advising Office and the rest of the Center for Student Success staff and partners across campus to improve student retention and success.
- As needed, develop advising materials and presentations to support individual and group student sessions.
- Serve as a resource for faculty advisors regarding adult undergraduate student needs.
- Coordinate communication to at-risk students regarding academic early warning, midterm warning and academic probation and create and monitor a Student Success Plan.
- Work with Director of Academic Advising to provide training for new and continuing faculty advisors.
- Appropriately handle, track and store sensitive & confidential materials according to established guidelines by understanding the institution's interpretation of FERPA rules for the release of student information to faculty, family members, students, etc.
- Identify the characteristics of Queens' adult undergraduate students, their unique barriers and trends in student progression.
- Participate in the presentation and ongoing development and evaluation of new student orientations focusing on how they meet the needs of adult undergraduates.
- Stay apprised of changing institutional policies and procedures including admissions requirements, new programs, course changes, deadlines, important dates, costs, updates in university-wide initiatives, and transfer requirements.
- Engage in professional development activities, including but not limited to, memberships in professional organizations, professional development through department and university activities and workshops.
- Other duties as necessary to meet University needs.
Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in academic advising in a university setting. Experience working with adult students preferable.
- Commitment to student development and passion for working with diverse undergraduate populations.
- Ability to quickly learn and communicate new information.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish rapport with students, faculty and staff.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks and demands.
- Computer proficiency, particularly in MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel. Experience with Jenzabar software preferable.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Proven ability to quickly learn and apply new information.
- Master's degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
