Summary: The Project Manager works within the Knight School to develop and coordinate programmatic opportunities focused on digital inclusion across the greater Charlotte area. The Knight School seeks an individual who can reach across organizational lines to develop and manage a community wide effort to increase digital literacy and digital access in Charlotte. The program director reports to the Dean of the Knight School, and works directly with community leaders, municipal agencies, residents and other stakeholders to prepare for and fully leverage opportunities afforded by the city’s developing digital infrastructure (fiber network) in Charlotte, with an emphasis on practical policies to ensure digital inclusion and digital literacy.

The role is highly collaborative and requires flexibility and innovative thinking, with the opportunity to find new ways to inspire community participation and action. The project manager will represent the Knight School and the city in a range of settings – from business meetings to neighborhood gatherings – and will need to be able to foster dialogue in a broad range of civic contexts. The position requires a deep understanding of community organizing, strategic planning, data collection and assessment. This is a two-year contract grant position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Dean of the Knight School to build sustainable community partnerships (with the city, libraries, schools, civic agencies, and businesses) focused on digital inclusion and literacy; locate and build new strategic partnerships.
  • Guide and support the steering team on digital inclusion, develop the strategic plan and direct its implementation.
  • Serve as a member of the city’s community cabinet on digital inclusion strategies, and collaborate with its leadership team of key agency stakeholders.
  • Communicate with community leaders and residents about community-wide improvements in digital infrastructure (such as fiber).
  • Collect data about existing digital infrastructure, digital inclusion and digital literacy resources, participating and prospective partners, and more general community and consumer advocacy resources; work with others to make data publicly accessible.
  • Develop strategies for digital inclusion, researched and benchmarked against national best practices; consult with regional and national field leaders and organizations.
  • Manage relationships and communications around digital inclusion efforts.
  • Coordinate and carry out community events, including neighborhood communication workshops, library and public school events, and other civically-oriented digital inclusion and literacy activities.
  • Identify and build champions in digitally disconnected communities, drive and support digital literacy partnerships, and communicate effectively about digital services.
  • Serve as first contact and ongoing project manager for such efforts, including maintaining records, managing resources, and identifying future opportunities.
  • Assess and develop reports and toolkits on digital inclusion efforts.
  • Coordinate with marketing and external relations teams to organize and promote digital inclusion efforts.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications Required:

  • College degree, preferably in communication, technology, social work, public administration, or allied field, or equivalent in education and experience.
  • Minimum three years of community organizing, engagement and outreach experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multiple stakeholder groups across diverse populations, with a continuing commitment to serving diverse publics and underserved communities.
  • Experience leading nonprofits, coalitions, field campaigns, or managing volunteer networks.
  • Proven ability to develop, write and implement a strategic plan in a strongly collaborative environment.
  • Outstanding verbal, written and digital communication/social media skills.
  • Ability to assist with design of survey tools, implementation of data collection, and build of preliminary databases. 
  • Strong work ethic, initiative, and organizational skills.

Physical Requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation):

  • Eye-Hand Coordination: Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard, copier, calculator and other office equipment.
  • Talking: Especially where one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Repetitive Motion: Movements frequently and regularly required using the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Average Hearing: Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.
  • Average Visual Abilities: Average, ordinary, visual acuity necessary including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Physical Strength: Will regularly be required to sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools and controls reach with hands and arms. Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

Work Conditions
  • Work in office environment involving contact with faculty, staff, students, executives, donors, parents, service providers and vendors.
  • Work has deadlines, multiple interruptions, high volume and may be stressful at times.
