SUMMARY

The Residence Life Internship is an opportunity to learn about and gain hands-on experience in the fun and exciting world of residence life for an outstanding, private, Presbyterian-affiliated, comprehensive university in Charlotte, NC.

A comprehensive Intern Training Plan will be developed and closely monitored to ensure the experience is rewarding and enriching as you pursue your goal of a career in higher education within Residence Life. The expected time commitment of this internship is 25 hours per week. This a 12-month internship position which will report to the Director of Residence Life.

In addition to learning and preparing for a career in Residence Life, this unpaid internship opportunity offers a furnished apartment with utilities, University meal plan, graduate tuition remission for up to 6 credit hours per semester, and free access to the Levine Fitness Center. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee daily operation and function of the HBO Residence Hall (three floors with 118 beds).
  • Supervise and mentor the Resident Assistants assigned to HBO.
  • Adjudicate judicial cases that originate from HBO and/or its residents.
  • Attend and participate in assigned meetings (including, but not limited to: various RA meetings, Residence Life Team meetings, hall meetings, Division wide events, one-on-one supervisor meetings).
  • Perform administrative duties as deemed necessary by Residence Life, including but not limited to the distribution of memos and check-in/check-out procedures, health and safety inspections, survey administration, and other paperwork as assigned.

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Other duties and special projects may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications

Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Two to five years of professional experience in Student Affairs or a related filed (may be gained through undergraduate participation as a Resident Advisor, club, or Greek Life participation).
  • Desire to pursue an internship to gain skills, knowledge, and abilities to seek a career in Residence Life for a college or university.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or the equivalent in experience in education required.
  • Demonstrated track record of actively promoting diversity and inclusion of all students.
  • Demonstrated organizational and planning skills; strong follow-up and follow-through skills to ensure completion of goals and objectives.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Computer proficiency (Microsoft Office preferred, including: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Flexibility to regularly work on evenings and weekends.
  • Willingness and commitment to live on-campus and serve as a positive role model for students.

Physical Requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation):

  • Eye-Hand Coordination: Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard, copier, calculator and other office equipment.
  • Talking: Especially where one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Repetitive Motion: Movements frequently and regularly required using the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Average Hearing: Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.
  • Average Visual Abilities: Average, ordinary, visual acuity necessary including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Physical Strength: Will regularly be required to sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools and controls reach with hands and arms. Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.

Work Conditions
  • Work in office environment involving contact with faculty, staff, students, executives, donors, parents, service providers and vendors.
  • Work may require night and weekend hours.
  • Work has deadlines, multiple interruptions, high volume and may be stressful at times.
