The ideal candidate is

• the exemplar engineer that the team looks to for advice on a wide range of technical problems
• a champion for the vision of the R29 platform - seamlessly aligning six engineering teams:

publishing platform (CMS), web platform, mobile platform, community, partnerships, and analytics

• the technical co-owner for development and delivery of the R29 platform, along with the Director of Technical Operations, who oversees IT, DevOps, and QA

The ideal candidate is responsible for

• strategic thinking to keep the engineering teams focused on the future of the business and purpose of their work
• roadmap execution by aligning engineering teams toward common technical and product goals
• technical execution to carry out the roadmap effectively with periodic adjustments to accurately reflect reality
• building a successful engineering team, through recruitment of top talent
• carefully establishing and nurturing a cohesive culture and rhythm that enables engineers to thrive
• upholding the quality of the R29 platform across data, code, and architecture -- which depends on integrity, consistency, performance, reliability, and scalability

• cultivate the ten values of the R29 P&E team -- judgment, communication, impact, curiosity, innovation, courage, passion, honesty, selflessness, and potential
• balancing user-facing features for immediate benefits with strategic investments in building blocks for platform evolution (e.g., pay down tech debt, invest in a solid service layer, continuously optimize data model, etc.)
• lead the #R29ThinkBig and #R29Everywhere initiatives to establish R29 as a hub of innovation and an industry leader amongst the developer community in New York and beyond

The ideal candidate must

• have experience managing and growing engineering teams in both small as well as large team environments
• have B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or related scientific fields for a solid technical and problem-solving foundation
• have expert knowledge in one or more of the following: PHP, Python, JavaScript
• have expert knowledge in one or more of the following: MySQL, Redis (exp. with NoSQL and/or graph databases is a plus)
• have sense of humor, positive attitude, and passion for R29’s vision
• be mature, humble, autonomous, and agile within a fast-paced environment
• be able to determine root causes from symptoms through collaboration
• be able to provide frameworks that empower thoughtful and effective problem solving, reflection, and idea exploration
• be able to make wise decisions amidst ambiguity swiftly without being burdened by analysis paralysis
• be able to articulate resourcing needs through budget and ROI
• be able to learn and evaluate technologies and methodologies quickly within the context of R29’s needs and vision
• be able to differentiate between processes that enable vs. processes that hinder, guidelines vs. rules, empowerment vs. losing control, and managing up vs. buttering up
