Refinery29—one of the fastest growing media companies in the US—is looking for a hyper-creative, digitally savvy Photo Director to lead the R29 brand to higher visibility in the industry for innovative photography. Managing a growing photo team of 15+ fulltime and freelance members, management, hiring, growing talent, and nurturing a creative culture are paramount. The Photo Director will work across an exciting range of projects—from editorial, to advertising, to special—with executives across the company and must be highly collaborative, energetic, and fueled by the desire to advance the brand and discover unique solutions.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Maintain and advance the Refinery29 visual brand through photography by establishing and enforcing brand guidelines and continuously exploring new ways to enhance our work in photography
• Sourcing new talent, meetings with photographers, agencies, and growing our network of contributors
• Oversee photography team day-to-day, providing direction, guidance, and structure, conducting photo meetings and employee reviews
• Oversee the photo budget, working with the editors to forecast and actualize budgets, anticipate company needs and budget appropriately
• Oversee contracts, rights, accounts, and departmental procedures and negotiations
• Hiring, training, and mentoring photo editors and expanding our freelance creative network
• Ensure that team is delivering projects on time, on budget, and that all executions are high quality
• Approve model casting, art direction briefs, and review key edits with team
• Lead key photo-driven initiatives within the company
• Working closely with our Creative Directors and UX and Product teams to ensure that photography is a key consideration on all new site templates
• Collaborating with key executives across departments in editorial, ad sales, marketing, and other partners to ensure photography is aligned with their project objectives
• Setting art direction for key projects
• Assessing how photography is being used on a quarterly basis and leading the initiative of refreshing areas of the site that need to evolve and change
• Commissioning photographers, stylists, hair and makeup artists, set designers, and other relevant crew

• 10+ years of photography experience with an established publishing company, online media publication, and/or ad agency
• Excellent organizational managerial skills and experience managing a team of 6+ members
• Strong network of industry connections across photography, styling, hair and makeup, modeling, and production
• Strong, well-rounded portfolio demonstrating advanced experience with innovative photo art direction
• Experience with original photography production as well as stock, research, and archiving
• Superb communication skills and a positive, solutions-oriented mentality
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently under pressure handling multiple projects
• Fluent in Adobe Creative Suite
