Job Description

• Responsible for weighting all types of samples according to the test codes / remarks reflected on the worksheets
• Addition of enrichment broth to food and environmental samples as reflected in the relevant SOPs
• Laying out plates, Petri films and tubes and labeling them accordingly
• Incubating enrichment broth and plates bins at correct incubation condition
• Maintaining the balance between the quality and pace of the work to minimize the errors and optimize the efficiency of the work
• Serial dilution preparation as relates to each specific test codes
• Operation and calibration of equipment
• Sample login and disposal
• Reagent, solution, and microbiological media preparation
• Ensure lab supplies are in stock
• Provide accurate and timely results
• Responsible for area housekeeping and cleanliness on a daily basis
• Adhere and support the company quality and safety policies
• Adapt new methods to improve efficiencies
• Participate in proficiency testing programs as required
• Perform testing according to appropriate procedures
• Monitor daily equipment temperatures
• May be assigned and coordinate special projects as needed
• Perform tasks in other departments as required
• Communicating of the concerns and issues in regard to daily processing with the supervisor / Manager of the area
• Effective communication with all the staff and team members
• Keeping the personal training profile up to the date

Qualifications

  •  A post secondary education (degree and/or diploma) in a Science related program (Microbiology or Food Microbiology) is required.
    • A minimum of 1 – 3 years of experience in an Agricultural laboratory setting is required.
    • Experienced in making reagents/solutions and microbiological media
    • Knowledge and experienced with various microbiological tests for the detection of specific microorganisms such as E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, Campylobacter, S. aureus.
    • Experience with microbial identification tests.
    • Knowledge of accreditation process for lab including such as Health Canada, CFIA, ISO 17025, ISO 9001:2000 and FDA.
    • Sound knowledge of good laboratory practices (GLP).
    • Knowledge of the Canadian Agricultural sectors (Grain, Meat, Fishery, etc.) is required.
    • Experience performing analysis using PCR and Real-time PCR would be considered an asset.
    • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and be proficient in using various types of computer software (Word, Excel. PowerPoint, Outlook).
    • Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
    • Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced, highly professional environment.
    • Ability to work well with others & independently.
    • Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
    • Works well under pressure.
    • Extended hours and shift / weekend work may be required.
    • Ensures full compliance with the company’s Health & Safety, Code of Integrity, and Professional Conduct policies.
