Job Description
The Senior Health & Safety Business Partner will be responsible for Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) activities in one or more business locations, assessing and managing hazards and risk, reducing loss, applying the global Health & Safety Management System, and meeting or exceeding relevant federal and local regulation.
This position will be located in the Gulf Coast area of the United States.
- Promote positive employee relations to strengthen employee and organizational commitment to a strong health and safety culture within defined region of responsibility.
- Responsible for dissemination and implementation of global, regional and country SGS Health & Safety standards, policies, and strategy.
- Educate managers and employees on Health and Safety practices through effective communication programs and one-on-one consultations where appropriate. Includes establishing regional Health & Safety communication plans to drive top page strategies via business leadership.
- Works with the relevant management to deliver this training internally or through external sources.
- Develops, implements and maintains company policies adhering to local, state/provincial and federal environmental, health and safety regulations.
- Involved in the design and development of facilities, work areas and work procedures and makes environmental, health and safety recommendations accordingly.
- Educate managers and supervisors on content of the North America Market (NAM) Safety Leadership Objective checklists, monitor for compliance and report non-conformances to management.
- Ensures maintenance of continuous “audit ready” state of compliance with SGS and governmental H&S Standards
- Conducts H&S audits and inspections to assess the status of Health & Safety programs, generates reports, communicates findings and strategies needed for compliance with the supported Line of Business.
- Act as the company representative during government inspections and investigations.
- Accountable for the implementation of the Health, Safety and Environment management system and utilize the CRYSTAL safety data management system to collate, analyze and report non-conformances, at risk leading and lagging indicator trends to the Director, Local Management and the JHSC.
- Implement and support national safety strategies that enable the company to adapt to future organizational needs and requirements. Includes: self-assessment action plans; campaigns including safety month; digital tool expansion; digital chemical management; occupational Health management systems.
- Participates in the incident investigation of all HSE-related serious incidents/fatalities and HIPO “near misses” at supported locations, utilizing formal tools to identify the root cause and develop appropriate corrective and preventive actions.
- Undertake compensation case management through timely reporting, deployment of modified work programs & early/safe return to work strategies as needed.
- Facilitate implementation of programs on various topics in support of the SGS Health and Safety Management system. May include topics such as confined space, energy control, fall protection and machine guarding.
- Leads an effective implementation and utilization of risk identification, evaluation, and management processes such as permit to work, behavior-based safety and field level risk assessments to ensure a strong incident prevention culture within the site.
- Assists the Industrial Hygiene Manager with the implementation of Comprehensive Industrial Hygiene Exposure Assessment and Monitoring Plans by coordinating and, when needed, participating in IH hazard identification and assessment activities.
- Coordination and monitoring of site occupational health programs for various exposures as required by drug and alcohol, fit for duty and various substance exposure requirements.
- Coordinate Emergency Response, Business Continuity planning and related training, and leadership activities.
- Serves as the Business HSE technical expert, providing technical expertise/coaching as needed in all areas and initiatives of the function including capital project review and risks management associated with non-capital modifications.
- Act as internal auditor and administrator to achieve or maintain any required managements systems for the site.
- Familiar with SGS, local or provincial environmental requirements for operating the SGS facility and appropriately observing and reporting non-conformances to management.
- Familiar with environmental waste management requirements such as the Transportation Dangerous Goods and Manifesting, waste generation registration for hazardous waste and legislated requirements.
- Attend Health and Safety courses and seminars to keep current with acceptable Health and Safety and environmental practices.
- Promoting and improving Health and Safety while advising the Joint Health and Safety Committee where applicable.
- May be assigned special or ad-hoc projects, periodically.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor level degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related program
- 10+ years of progressive Health and Safety experience in a medium or large-size industrial or professional services environment is required.
Licenses/Certifications
- CRSP, CSP, IOSH, NEBOSH
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Solid understanding of Health and Safety management and its connection to the business strategy.
- Must have a proactive Health and Safety attitude. Demonstrate strong leadership abilities with the profile to drive local adoption of Health, Safety and Environment programs.
- Familiar with compliance requirements with all environmental, health and safety regulations, and keeps abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization. Understanding of the Health, Safety and Environment national requirements and how the federal/provincial/state legislation applies to the SGS HSE program.
- Superior organizational, communications, and interpersonal skills are essential.
- Bilingual fluency required if region includes Quebec.
- Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
- Proficient in using various type of computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.).
- A solid understanding of MS Project Management, Oracle and other web-based applications would also be an asset.
- Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills including grammar and composition.
- Ability to work well with others & independently.
- Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
- Works well under pressure.
- Ensures full compliance with the company’s Health and Safety, Code of Integrity, and Professional Conduct policies.
- Ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced, highly professional environment.
Travel
- This position requires regular travel to client or project sites. Travel will include domestic locations and will typically involve overnight stays. Candidates should expect to be on-site approximately 1–2 times per month
