Main Purpose of Role

The primary function of this role is to work in the Gas Chromatography laboratory in Rathnew. This includes testing of gas samples using SGS GAS and Pharmacopeia procedures, develop SGS GAS procedures for new & existing GC testing methods and compile reports for the testing.

In this role you will work to cGMP standards and complete work under GAS ISO17025 accreditation.

You will also complete validation testing for new equipment and methods being brought into service under direction and support from the laboratory manager or technical manager. You will develop a knowledge and competence of Gas Chromatography using TCD, FID, PDHID, DID, SCD, MS, and other detection technologies and must have the willingness to learn. Full training will be provided from our offices in Ireland and by external vendors when necessary.

You will work with a team of passionate hands-on engineers, scientists, and other departments of SGS GAS such as the quality team and the field-testing team. You will also work with the wider SGS group.

Good communication skills are required. You must be self-motivated with a “can-do” attitude and be customer focused.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work independently and provide guidance and role modelling for Junior staff.
  • Focus on customer requirements and prioritise workload in the GC lab.
  • Run the operation meeting for gas testing and instrumentation reports.
  • Role model clean as you go policy in the GC laboratory and act of the area owner.
  • Perform a variety of routine sample testing to quantitatively measure gas quality in a variety of products and for different applications.
  • Execute validated analytical methods with minimal supervision.
  • Analyse, compile and format results of testing into clear reports for lab and field-testing work in a timely manner.
  • Prepare GCs for testing and complete system suitability testing.
  • Assist in development and validation of new basic and complex analysis for GC-TCD/FID/MS/SCD/DID/ECD under supervision.
  • Problem-solve basic and complex GC technical issues and utilise internal and external expertise to identify and address problems with the minimum impact.
  • Report issues to the quality department and take part in the relevant investigations.
  • Comply with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), ISO17025 requirements and all internal processes.
  • Participate in internal and external laboratory audits under the direction of the SGS-GAS quality manager.
  • Be willing and able to work as a team member to ensure continuous improvement relative to laboratory functions.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols.
  • Be available for occasional weekend work (short shifts – 2 to 4 hours).
  • On rare occasions travel to customer sites to complete testing and/or technical meetings and reviews.
  • Complete project work within the SGS laboratory network and SGS customers – potentially on another site for a defined duration.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in science. With 2 years minimum experience in analytical chemistry & Gas Chromatography techniques.
