Since 1976, St. Joseph Center has been meeting the needs of low-income and homeless individuals and families in Venice and throughout Los Angeles County.  The Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community organization that assists people without regard for religious affiliation or lack thereof through 20+ programs in four pillars of service: Outreach and Engagement, Housing Services, Mental Health, and Education and Vocational Training.  St. Joseph Center serves more than 10,000 people each year. 

Brief Description of Principal Activities

Multifaceted intervention, prevention, mental health, and housing assistance is offered through street outreach and 9 service sites throughout Los Angeles County. St. Joseph Center also provides on-site services at five permanent supportive housing developments, and will provide services at an additional six more sites in the coming year.  St. Joseph Center’s total holistic approach to services provide our clients with the help they need to regain their stability.

Job Summary

The Mental Health Specialist (Bilingual) for the Animo Program works as a team member with several social service professional and paraprofessional staff ensuring the delivery of quality care in accordance to the rules and regulations established by the Los Angeles Department of Mental Health for contracted agencies as well as adhering to the mission of St. Joseph Center.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Provides targeted outreach, engagement and education activities to Latino individuals and families in order to increase awareness regarding overall mental health and health issues.
  • Provides ongoing mental health and crisis intervention services to a caseload of consumers as well as other interventions that promote wellness and recovery.

Essential Duties:

  • Facilitates and complete appropriate portions of the Adult Initial Assessment.
  • Collects and complete all required SJC/DMH documents while assisting in the development of an appropriate coordinated clinical service plan; obtains appropriate service authorization.
  • Participate in regular team meetings with the Latino ISM and provide feedback about clients in the recovery process.
  • Participates in regular team meetings with the ISM to review existing caseload, discuss new and ongoing clients.
  • Facilitates treatment referrals to higher levels of care as needed.
  • Documents and provides feedback to other ISM staff about client activities in the recovery process.
  • Documents and bills all activities as required by agency and/or funders.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Fluency in Spanish and English is required. 
  • Must be highly motivated and a self-starter.  Must have the ability to communicate with and relate to a diverse group of people including clients, community, and other staff.  Must have excellent administrative and organizational skills

Experience:

  • Experience working with Hispanics is preferred.  
  • Demonstrate experience with providing mental health assessments using diagnostic criteria from the DSM-IV.

Education:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in social work, psychology, human services or a related field

Direct Reports:

  • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Computer Skills:

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and widely supported internet browsers.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations:

  • Required: CA BBS registered MSW, MFT, APCC
  • Valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
  • Valid automobile liability insurance.
