Founded in Chicago in 1876, Sacred Heart Schools at Sheridan Road (Hardey Preparatory for Boys and Academy of the Sacred Heart for Girls) are independent, Catholic, single-sex elementary schools committed to academic excellence within the context of a Christian, faith-based community.  The educational mission is deeply rooted in the 200-year tradition of the Society of the Sacred Heart and shared with the Network of Sacred Heart Schools located in 30 countries, including 22 schools in the United States.  The essence of this tradition is the total development of each child: spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical. Our girls and boys are taught in single-sex classrooms, but follow a similar curriculum and share in many activities.  With a total enrollment of approximately 700 students, the schools are organized into three academic divisions each led by a division head.

Essential Job Functions

Administrative Responsibilities::

 Stay informed on rules, procedures and judging standards for debate events

 Set practice/behavior standards required for students to enter tournaments

 Meet with students on a regular basis (Thursday 330pm – 5pm and 

    Friday 245 pm – 4pm)

 Coordinate student and judge entry, and supervise and judge at weekend and 

     evening tournaments

Coaching Qualities:

 Teach students theories and skills underlying the various competition events

 Facilitate acquisition of literary material and research information for speeches

 Foster skills in research, organization and filing of evidence for building cases

 Review students’  cases and  pieces to assess for coherent and 

      convincing messages

 Conduct practices and drills to reinforce and assess skill development

 Review judge evaluations and motivate students to constantly improve

 Nurture beginning students while challenging experienced students

     skills in life and careers

 Continuously assess strengths and weaknesses of the program to improve it 

      from year to year

 Bachelor’s degree or master’s degree preferred

 Experience with middle school debate; classroom teaching experience preferred

 Ability to work collaboratively and communicate
