Software Engineer, Tax Platform

  • Full-time

Company Description

We believe everyone should be able to participate and thrive in the economy. So we’re building tools that make commerce easier and more accessible to all. We started with a little white credit card reader but haven’t stopped there. Our new reader helps our sellers accept chip cards and NFC payments, and our Cash app lets people pay each other back instantly. We’re empowering the independent electrician to send invoices, setting up the favorite food truck with a delivery option, helping the ice cream shop pay its employees, and giving the burgeoning coffee chain capital for a second, third, and fourth location. Let’s shorten the distance between having an idea and making a living from it. And make it easier for customers to shop and pay at their favorite businesses. We’re here to help sellers of all sizes start, run, and grow their business—and helping them grow their business is good business for everyone.

Job Description

Tax Platform builds and runs the common infrastructure, workflow management, and data pipeline that allow Square to fulfill its annual obligations to the IRS and other tax agencies around the world. Key parts of this project involve integrating with and corralling data from all of Square’s money-moving products to make a solid determination of the identity of individuals or companies receiving money from us. We care about a solid and straightforward UX for Square’s customers while building efficient internal support for times when customer questions or issues arise. We deal with sensitive information and highly value privacy and security, so we build safe and secure solutions using Square’s strong security infrastructure.

We strive to create a great customer experience by ensuring high quality data (both customer-provided and Square-reported) and solving common problems for all of Square’s products, thus empowering other product engineers at Square to do the right thing.

We’re looking to write the next version of the system. Among its goals: eagerly identify new potential tax-year reportees, giving Square ample time to resolve identity conflicts and ensure a low rate of reporting errors; provide a solid and easily understood audit trail of every tax-related action taken on an individual account; greatly reduce manual work for our in-house tax operations team; increase reliability and responsiveness; turn a hard problem into a nice customer experience.

You will:

  • Design and implement new features that increase efficiency, security, and usability of our tax reporting features, making impact across Square Register, Cash, and Caviar, while also greatly improving the lives of internal tax operations and contributing to a solid customer experience for Square’s customers

  • Interact with various product team engineers to help them successfully incorporate their products in our platform

  • Learn about Square’s data pipeline and major product offerings, while developing systems that remain reliable in spite of occasionally unreliable vendors

  • Gain an understanding of what it takes to run a business: in particular, understanding the 1099-K problem domain, among others

  • Get to know and interact directly with various internal customers

  • Make significant contributions to improving Square’s bottom line

Qualifications

You have:

  • BA/BS degree or equivalent practical experience

  • Experience developing product infrastructure or web services

  • Experience developing server-side code

  • Ideally, experience with large data pipelines (and SQL or similar query languages) and occasionally developing front-end code with JavaScript frameworks

Technologies we use and teach:

  • Ruby on Rails, RSpec, Java

  • S2S architecture, REST APIs, protobufs

  • MySQL, Redis, Hive, and Vertica
