Job Description

Our team is responsible for Square’s Point of Sale app, the main entry point through which our merchants interact with us. We help service and develop features that affect how millions of merchants run their business, with an eye towards a great user experience and simple design.

In the past, our team has shipped:

  • Offline Mode
  • Open Tickets
  • Card on File

You will:

  • Work with server and mobile client engineers on Square’s Point of Sale mobile app, used by millions of Square merchants to run their business.
  • Help build and improve highly-available, distributed systems that handle critical features such as offline mode and open tickets.
  • Debug production issues across services and levels of the stack.
  • Work with a small team to determine the roadmap of future features for a customer-centric product.

Technologies we use and teach:


  • Java, Ruby, Go, Javascript
  • Guice, Protocol Buffers, gRPC, Hibernate, jOOQ, Ember, Ruby on Rails
  • MySQL, Redis, Zookeeper

You have:

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience.
  • Interest in working full-stack, from optimizing database transactions to building distributed systems and front end web applications.
  • Passion for building products that are beautiful outside and inside – from their user experience to their robust and elegant design.
  • Data and metrics-oriented mindset: you want your work to be measurable and impactful.
  • Customer empathy: you understand your customers’ needs and requirements.
