Job Description

Within Risk Operations at Square, you’ll design, build, and operationalize systems and processes to root out high-risk activity across the Square platform of products. We are looking for a Senior Chargebacks Architect to join our ever-evolving Risk team to ensure that Square is industry-leading in chargeback management and deflection.

The Senior Chargebacks Architect will work hand in hand with leadership and engineering teams to optimize Square’s chargeback process end-to-end. We treat chargebacks as a product at Square, and you will manage the complexity internally to create a seamless and elegant experience externally. You will balance Square’s needs with seller experience and zero-in on the right trade-offs to be made all along the chargeback resolution spectrum. Internally, you will master the science of chargebacks through scaling operational needs and maximizing our win rates. You will drive innovation of the chargebacks process at Square by working to push the boundaries with our networks and acquirers for the benefit of our sellers. You will partner closely with many teams across the business both inside and outside risk - Data Science, Engineering, Payments, Legal, and Finance to name a few. You will have the opportunity to drive innovation and influence Square’s broader Risk roadmap, programs, and processes.

You will be responsible for setting and managing top-level KPIs, establishing operational metrics in-line with automation goals, and driving process improvements through analysis. The ideal candidate will have expertise in chargebacks and network regulations, strong project management and data analysis skills, and be excellent at cross-functional management and communication. This role will require a bias toward taking action in a fast-paced environment.

 

You will:

  • Optimize the way that we prevent, respond, and learn from chargebacks at Square - you will drive the ongoing strategy to maximize win rates across all products in existing and new markets

  • Partner with Engineering, Data Science, and Payments teams to design solutions to operational problems by influencing new product roadmaps and market launches

  • Translate the complicated chargebacks process internally at Square, and work cross-functionally to consistently push the boundaries on simplifying this process for our sellers

  • Ensure Square is well-versed in network rules, regulations, and requirements for chargeback processing, and will work to design industry-leading chargeback flows and processes

  • Diagnose problems and develop compelling, data-driven recommendations

  • Manage the development and reporting of key performance indicators; present analyses and findings to senior management to steer the Risk team’s strategic vision

  • Perform ad hoc data analysis to remove roadblocks and ensure operations and automation are running smoothly

  • Drive innovation within the management of the chargeback process at Square through third-party evaluation and integration

Qualifications

You have:

  • 3+ years of experience with chargeback processes and/or systems as well as network rules and regulations

  • Excellent analytical skills and problem solving abilities; understanding of statistical analysis

  • Advanced SQL proficiency and experience with data visualization technology

  • An ability to answer unstructured business questions and work independently to drive projects to conclusion with cross-functional partners

  • A BS/BA in Business, Economics, Statistics, Math, or a related technical field

  • A strong passion for Square’s mission

 

Even better:

  • International chargeback processing experience

  • Experience designing, implementing, and measuring A/B tests

  • Experience using statistics and machine learning to solve problems and innovate within the chargebacks process

  • Masters in Economics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics
