Job Description

TL;DR As an engineer on the Point of Sale team, you’re working on Square’s most important product – directly contributing to an app used by millions of sellers to run their businesses every day. You’ll have near infinite opportunity to work on interesting problems: High availability systems, great user experiences, hardware integration, and everything in between. You’ll regularly work across product, design, and other engineering teams to make decisions, improve features, and get things done – that’s pretty sweet.

Longer version The Point of Sale team serves two sets of customers: We build the Square Point of Sale app (https://squareup.com/pos), which is used by millions of sellers around the world to run their businesses every day. We also build the Square Point of Sale platform, which is a foundational set of APIs and components used to build other Square apps like Retail Point of Sale, Appointments, and more. Both of these customers are at the heart of Square’s business – you’re directly contributing to what the world recognizes as Square.

Engineers on the Point of Sale team have the opportunity to work on both features and platform / infrastructure. On any day, you might work with a backend engineer to debug an issue in a new server-side service, talk to a designer to get the UX of a feature just right, or work with infrastructure and platform teams to determine how best to modularize a feature for reuse. Our engineers enjoy working on all parts of our apps, and can tie all this work together to ship a high quality feature.

Qualifications

You will (or want to learn!)...

  • Enjoy working on mobile apps at all levels – from networking up to user interfaces and whatever’s in between.

  • Build high availability and highly resilient systems which can accept and accurately report payments no matter the network or device conditions.

  • Collaborate with iOS, Android, and Server engineers to ship features.

  • Work with product managers and designers to iterate on and define product scope and design.

  • Swift, Objective-C for development.

  • KIF for UI testing.

  • Protocol buffers for network transport.

  • CocoaPods for our build environment.
