Job Description

The mission of the Compliance Operations team at Square Japan is to perform the day-to-day
operational tasks associated with regulatory, payment network, and partnership requirements. The
team actively engages in account reviews, monitoring for high-risk activity and enforcing Square's
Merchant User Agreement. Additionally, the team works closely with Square's financial institution
partners to conduct investigations and share information to ensure transaction activity through Square
are compliant with applicable legal, regulatory and payment network requirements.

You will:

  • Develop and execute Japan Compliance operational strategy in conjunction with senior leadership across the Compliance team
  • Analyze and improve on best-practices in various Compliance work streams to identify efficiencies and improve accuracy of decision making
  • Liaise with Square partners and the US team on Compliance initiatives
  • Coach and mentor team members with a focus on professional development and upstream thinking
  • Manage the team by capitalizing on opportunities for increased effectiveness and efficiency, driving productivity initiatives
  • Review reports involving compliance-related alerts
  • Verify merchant information and conduct due diligence reviews as part of Square's account verification policy
  • Interact with Square customers to ensure full compliance with all applicable laws and policies
  • Work cross-functionally with Support, Risk, and other operations teams within and outside of Square
  • Communicate with customers via CRM, email, and telephone
  • Respond to inbound requests for information and investigation from financial institution partners

Qualifications

You have:

  • A BA/BS degree or related experience
  • Strong operations mindset involving time-sensitive directives and ability to self-manage workflow across competing priorities
  • Japanese fluency with outstanding written & verbal communication skills in English (equivalent to TOEIC score 900 or above)
  • Adept at communicating with Square partners and ability to advocate on behalf of Square’s growth initiatives
  • Strong analytical mindset to drive sound business decisions
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment with a drive to deliver outstanding results

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Previous experience in compliance or legal work with a financial institution or payment-focused company preferred
  • Passion for Square. Strong interest in technology/knowledge of the industry
  • Experience in payment industry, fast-growing, or start-ups are a plus
