Job Description

We are on the hunt for a strategic, creative and results-oriented Brand Strategy Manager. Join a team which is unified in its passion for our sellers, and is working to build upon what is already one of the most loved brands amongst small businesses in the United States.

This role will be responsible for management and ongoing development of Square’s brand strategy, optimizing and updating our work in response to our seller’s needs and the changing competitive landscape. You will continue to build upon our brand strategy to reflect where we are now, and where we want to be in the future — and manage a strong, cross-functional roadmap to get us there.

You’ll construct personas and identities, and develop a deep understanding of the needs, values and drivers of our sellers across segments and products.

You’ll collaborate with our Insights team to better understand the value of Square’s brand and impact of marketing for brand awareness, how we measure it, and how we optimize our future brand campaigns and initiatives to better meet our goals. You’ll also take this insight and apply it across non-performance marketing channels to understand the top-of-funnel impact they have on building Square’s brand.

You’ll work closely with Square’s Marketing, Product and Creative teams to educate them on our brand position and ensure that our values and promise are reflected consistently across our products, design, content and creative.

You’ll collaborate with office experience and internal teams to help bring the Square brand to life internally across our office spaces, and ensure that all Squares understand our brand’s position and values, and celebrate the story we’re telling to the world.

The ideal candidate for this position will have worked for a developing or emerging brand with multiple products, having played a role in brand strategy and planning, research and marketing. They will have a strong and considered balance between strategic planning and creative execution, and feel comfortable diving deep into research and insights, as much as they are thinking quickly and testing new, spontaneous ideas. They will thrive in a fast-paced, innovative environment.

You will:

  • Support the evolution and management of Square’s brand strategy and architecture

  • Partner with Square’s product and insights teams to identify and prioritize the most important audiences to target to drive awareness about the brand

  • Develop a deep understanding of our seller personas, mindsets, attitudes, values and behaviors

  • Understand Square’s marketing campaign hierarchy, message and audience crossover, and ensure we are always telling a unified, cohesive story across platforms and campaigns

  • Analyze, monitor and report on competitive landscape to determine where our brand and products fit over time, where to target sellers and how to have the greatest impact for brand (including analyzing competitive positioning, products, brands and campaigns)

  • Work cross-functionally with product, marketing, creative, insights, international and office teams to build the brand internally and externally and deepen our seller engagement

  • Be an advocate for Square’s sellers and a champion for their needs

Qualifications

You have:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills - can clearly communicate an idea, thought or program to people at all levels of understanding and seniority

  • Highly collaborative, a cross-functional leader with advanced interpersonal skills who thrives working in teams

  • Comfort in interpreting, understanding and applying insights from marketing and brand research and analytics Have top-notch writing skills and storytelling prowess, in order to continually craft the Square story for sellers

  • Ability to work with some levels of ambiguity, in a business-critical role that will be defined and redefined along the journey

  • A willingness to listen, take feedback and operate in a highly creative, strong-willed team

  • A balance of art and science — strong abilities to think creatively, and back it up with measurement and insights

  • A drive for results and leadership skills

  • The ability to think outside of the box - can identify problems, test new ideas and develop fast solutions

  • Advanced interpersonal skills

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in brand strategy and marketing, preferably client-side

  • Balance of analytical and creative thinking

  • Self-starter with strong communication skills

  • BA/BS degree required (or equivalent practical experience), Masters degree preferred
