Software Engineer, Underwriting Platform

  • Full-time

Company Description

We believe the economy is better when everyone has access. When everyone has room to grow. No one should be left out because the cost is too great or the technology too complex. We started with a little white credit card reader but haven’t stopped there. We’re empowering the independent electrician to send invoices, setting up the favorite food truck with a delivery option, helping the ice cream shop pay its employees, and giving the burgeoning coffee chain capital for a second, third, and fourth location. We’re here to help sellers of all sizes start, run, and grow their business—and helping them grow their business is good business for everyone.

Job Description

Square is a payment aggregator, i.e. we process payments on behalf of our sellers. Operating in the heavily regulated financial space, we are required to verify a sellers identity before we can let them take payments. The Underwriting Platform team owns the automated Customer Identification Program infrastructure, a vital component to get new sellers ready to do business in just a few minutes. As the entry point into Squares Managed Payments Platform, we help internal and external developers solve customer identity and verification challenges across national and international markets.

Hard Problems

  • Identity verification: Security and privacy for our merchants are extremely important to us, and our systems are the first line of defense against bad actors trying to use Squares platform illegitimately. We are constantly pushing the boundaries of automated identity verification to give our product teams the room to create frictionless user experiences, and our legal & compliance teams the tools they need to be more effective.

  • International: With the efficacy of different identity verification mechanisms varying wildly from market to market, this team investigates and incorporates new technologies to automate customer verification and help product teams onboard new sellers of all sizes across the globe in just a few minutes.

  • Scale: As the team that owns the central customer identity and identity verification systems, our platform has to serve not just the whole company and our customers, but also third-party developers and their customers.

You will:

  • Build our Identity Platform, used by the rest of the organization and a key strategic asset of Square

  • Design and implement high-volume, low-latency, distributed identity systems, making thoughtful tradeoffs between consistency and availability when both are not possible

  • Abstract away the legacy APIs of the financial world into consistent, coherent service APIs for Squares products to build upon

  • Build systems that manage customers sensitive data and hold Square to the highest standards for security and compliance

  • Work cross-functionally with our product, business, and finance teams to develop Squares global payments strategy

  • See the big picture to design fault tolerant systems so the team can be brave, move fast, and break things, without ever showing a negative impact

Qualifications

You have:

  • BA/BS degree or equivalent experience (6+ years preferred)

  • Innate curiosity and a desire to be responsible for all aspects of reliably identifying and verifying businesses and individuals, in a small highly focused team

  • Understanding and curiosity in creating highly available, accurate, global identity verification systems

  • Track record of pursuing self directed side projects, research, or open source projects

  • Interest in changing the payments landscape in the US and globally
