Job Description

Square is seeking a highly motivated attorney as its first legal hire in Australia to provide legal guidance on commercial contracts, product development, and regulatory initiatives. You will be responsible for negotiating complex commercial contracts, monitoring Squares enterprise risk management, and ensuring Squares regulatory compliance in Australia. Were looking for a highly adaptable, self-motivated individual who can handle fast-paced projects independently.

You will:

  • Ensure Squares regulatory compliance with its Australian financial services licence, including the review and oversight of its enterprise risk management programme  

  • Draft and negotiate a wide range of commercial and intellectual property agreements affecting the companys products and services

  • Work cross-functionally on a variety of legal matters to support business development and innovation in the Australian market

  • Provide ideas and insights into how the company can work within the law to create amazing product experiences for our customers and reduce legal risks

  • Liaise with government authorities and regulators on matters relevant to the payments and consumer financial industries, including ASIC and AUSTRAC

  • Provide sound compliance advice on laws and regulations relevant to consumer protection, advertising, IP, data protection, and the software and financial services industries

  • Draft terms of use, product policies, and disclosures, and implement related processes

  • Manage communications and/or requests for information from government authorities, sellers and consumers

  • Effectively collaborate with domestic counsel to provide globally aligned legal advice

Qualifications

You have:

  • Familiarity with launching products and advising on the legal and regulatory aspects of product development in the technology space

  • Excellent commercial negotiation and drafting skills

  • A passion for fintech and the future of commerce

  • Fluency in translating legal advice into actionable guidance for innovative product and business teams

  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage projects effectively

  • Sound and practical business judgment, intellectual creativity, and problem-solving skills

  • 5+ years post-qualification experience as an attorney/contract negotiator practising in Australia

  • Experience in fintech/e-commerce/financial services (desirable but not essential)
