Product Manager, Capital
- San Francisco, CA
We believe everyone should be able to participate and thrive in the economy. So we’re building tools that make commerce easier and more accessible to all. We started with a little white credit card reader but haven’t stopped there. Our new reader helps our sellers accept chip cards and NFC payments, and our Cash app lets people pay each other back instantly. We’re empowering the independent electrician to send invoices, setting up the favorite food truck with a delivery option, and helping the ice cream shop pay its employees. And, with Square Capital, we have extended over $4.5 billion in funding to our sellers, helping them manage their cashflow and making it easy to invest in and grow their business. Let’s shorten the distance between having an idea and making a living from it. And make it easier for customers to shop and pay at their favorite businesses. We’re here to help sellers of all sizes start, run, and grow their business—and helping them grow their business is good business for everyone.
Square's rapidly growing financing platform, Square Capital has revolutionized the way businesses and consumers obtain the funding needed to achieve their goals. Unlike traditional business financing products, Square Capital offers are extended to pre-qualified sellers with no application process, their funds are deposited as soon as the next business day, and repayment happens as a fixed percentage of daily card sales. Since the product launched in 2014, Square Capital has extended more than $4.5 billion to over a hundred thousand sellers. Additionally, with Square Installments, we are empowering sellers to offer monthly installment plans, so that their customers can access goods and services they value, but cannot or do not want to pay for immediately.
As the Product Manager for the Underwriting Platform team on Square Capital, you will be responsible for the vision, roadmap, and execution of services and infrastructure that power credit review and offer generation for all of Capital’s current and future products. Partnering closely with Engineering and Data Science, you will build a platform that enables products to leverage internal and external data integrations to allow rapid iteration of product risk models and support compliance with regulatory requirements around underwriting policies and decisions. You will own prioritization of the roadmap, decide when to build new underwriting capabilities, and support the launch of all current and future products on Capital and beyond.
Intimately learn the technical details of our underwriting capabilities and systems to become not only an expert in them, but also deeply understand the underlying data sources and how product and data science teams use them to successfully execute on our growth and risk goals.
Define, communicate, and refine a clear underwriting platform vision and strategy based on our customers’ problems. You will use this to determine, write, and revise as needed the team’s annual plan.
Lead all ongoing and quarterly roadmap planning based on the annual plan. Manage highly cross-functional intake processes to ensure we are supporting our product and data science teams’ need to rapidly build and iterate.
Define and document clear requirements, most of which will be deeply influenced by the needs of the product teams, for the underwriting platform team’s prioritized initiatives.
Own the success of the team's projects - manage project timelines and deliver with your engineering and data science partners quantifiable results in a timely manner. You will also work with external vendors for data integrations and ongoing maintenance of data sources.
Over time, develop your own perspective on additional internal/external data sources and data trends that may solve our product and data science teams’ problems.
BA/BS degree with 5+ year(s) of experience and at least 2-3 of that as a product manager - strong preference for PMs with past platform experience
Strong cross-functional collaboration skills - this is a highly cross-functional role and you need to be closely aligned with your engineering/data science partners as architectural and prioritization decisions are made
Backbone - you are able to listen, adjust accordingly, and influence well but can also say no (and why not) when needed
Strong interest in technical challenges, including a desire to poke around in the code for your own learning, and working on a broader platform team that is building tools and services for internal and external customers
Past experience in lending or financial services / technology is a nice to have
