Company Description

We believe everyone should be able to participate and thrive in the economy. So we’re building tools that make commerce easier and more accessible to all. We started with a little white credit card reader but haven’t stopped there. Our new reader helps our sellers accept chip cards and NFC payments, and our Cash app lets people pay each other back instantly. We’re empowering the independent electrician to send invoices, setting up the favorite food truck with a delivery option, helping the ice cream shop pay its employees, and giving the burgeoning coffee chain capital for a second, third, and fourth location. Let’s shorten the distance between having an idea and making a living from it. We’re here to help sellers of all sizes start, run, and grow their business—and helping them grow their business is good business for everyone.

Job Description

The Retail team at Square is going in deep, to understand what it takes to be successful in retailing. From the cozy local wine store to the trendy sneaker pop-up, we’re finding new ways to equip retail sellers and their staff with the tools they need to win. We’ve all felt that moment of delight when a meticulously crafted retail experience comes together in a great purchase. Whether it's online or off, we want to help make it seamless and magical.

Our team focuses on helping smaller retailers meet their customers wherever they are, be that in store, online, on social or messaging platforms. In store, we see the Point of Sale expanding from checkout to take on inventory management and clienteling features - even helping to manage incoming online orders. We’re addressing the desire for clean and minimalist store counters with intuitive yet sophisticated iOS, Android, and Web-based software that integrates seamlessly with our sleek hardware, all backed by highly reliable services.

The flagship Square for Retail product is our expansive POS for iPad. We’ve redesigned the POS for Retail by building extensive support for managing larger catalogs and multiple locations, with an ambitious roadmap based on feedback from Retail sellers and industry trends. Backing all that functionality is a rich set of services, primitives and APIs we are constantly expanding on to power more sophisticated capabilities yet, and deep integrations to channels beyond brick and mortar. The team you'll lead is responsible for these services and key integrations. This team's work skews heavily toward Go, Java and web UIs using Ember in our web-based Dashboard.

As an Engineering Manager on the Retail team, you will be responsible for driving technical direction, managing product goals, contributing to product strategy, and growing and developing your team. You will work with leaders across the company and collaborate with world class product managers and designers. Most importantly, you'll do it all in the service of our customers in the retail business.

What you will learn and do

  • You'll lead your team in creating beautiful, unique products which allow retail sellers to grow and thrive
  • You'll own the success of your team's product and deliver results in a timely manner
  • You'll build systems, services, and product features across multiple platforms that have immediate impact for restaurants
  • You'll grow the talented engineers on your team through delegation, challenge, support, and mentorship
  • You'll leverage your technical expertise to coach and guide your team, and to constantly raise the bar for them
  • You'll envision new products and features that are inspired, considered, and magical
  • You'll work closely and collaboratively with experienced designers, product managers, and engineers; both on our team and with our friends on other teams
  • You'll grow as a manager and as an engineer, and lift those around you as you do.
