Job Description

Square is looking for a US Transaction / Indirect Tax Manager to join its tax function. This position will be part of the Tax Team and will support all US transaction tax compliance, planning, reporting, audits and integration activities. Candidates must have the ability to operate independently in a fast-paced environment and work closely and proactively within the tax team and numerous functional teams across our organization.  

We are looking for passionate individuals who will work as a member of Squares Tax team, leading efforts to support our product teams. This leader will play an integral part in Squares success by working supporting Squares product business and finance leaders, driving tax planning and business forecasting, and developing strategic analysis around key business initiatives.

You will:

  • Ensure compliance with all US indirect tax requirements, which includes perform legal research and analysis on a variety of state and local indirect tax questions and draft memorandum and other written documents, maintain and communicate knowledge of past, present and potential future tax laws, regulations, rulings, procedures and court decisions.

  • Review and approve indirect tax compliance and reporting included but not limited to sales and use tax, Commercial Activities Tax, Gross Receipts and Property Taxes.

  • Review and manage monthly indirect tax accruals and reconciliations for key accounts for SOX control purposes.

  • Manage and ensure efficient closing of all  indirect tax audits and tax assessment notices

  • Develop and lead a team of motivated tax professionals; Work effectively with outside service providers; Team with internal groups within the Company such as accounting and legal departments.

  • Manage and participate in the development of software solutions for indirect tax automation;Identify, develop, and direct the implementation of technology tools and process improvements to reduce low-value work, and increase tax resource productivity/focus on more value-added work.

  • Provide expertise and oversee the implementation of processes as a result of, new and evolving business practices or tax legislation.

  • Guide and partner with various business teams to establish and refine tax policies, processes and system workflows.

  • Assist with developing and implementing  tax requirements for existing and new product launches.

Qualifications

You have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance or equivalent practical experience or related field.

  • 7+ years of tax experience working with complex multi-state taxes and/or industry, primarily focused on sales/use tax.

  • Strong project and people management and organization skills.

  • Familiarity with e-commerce sales taxation trends; A great sense of accuracy; Good listening, negotiation and problem-resolution skills.

  • An upbeat attitude; ability to seek out and implement internal or external best practices, required

  • Demonstrated passion and track record of delivering results in a rapidly changing business environment.

  • Must be able to analyze all sides of an argument, have strong analytical skills, document tax positions for our auditors, and ensure that the proper checks and balances are in place to ensure all aspects have been considered.

Even better:

  • CPA and/or Master's in Taxation.

  • Experience using G Suite applications (Spreadsheet, Docs, Slides, etc.)

  • Indirect tax experience in the technology industry and/or multinational company.

  • Experience in Big 4 accounting firm and/or law firm a plus.

  • Experience with running reports and extracting data or invoices from Oracle, MySql, Hyperion, APEX, Regulator, Looker and Netsuite

  • Experience with maintaining, running reports and extracting data from Vertex O
