Job Description

Our communications team is made up of tough, quick-witted, entrepreneurial, and intellectually-curious people. We communicate to the world Square’s purpose to empower businesses and individuals with elegant tools that give them an advantage where they previously and unfairly had none. We are looking for a Product Communications Lead to manage product comms initiatives across our wide product ecosystem – which spans hardware, payments, financial services, buyer tools, and more – as part of our Corporate Communications team. This position can be based in either San Francisco or Oakland, CA.

You will:

  • Conceptualize and execute proactive and reactive comms initiatives that shine a spotlight on Square’s innovation in hardware, payments, and financial products 

  • Drive announcements and launches for products including Square Register, Square Terminal, Square Capital, Square Payroll, Square Card, and more – including in international markets.

  • Serve as on-the-record spokesperson and handle rapid response as needed, including on product issues related to risk, security, privacy, regulatory matters, potential policy violations on the platform, etc.

  • Handle media briefings and spokespeople training on a regular basis.

  • Manage day-to-day relationships with key internal stakeholders, including product teams, international comms, marketing, content & digital, investor relations, and legal.

  • Develop and maintain reporter relationships across national, local, business, tech, and vertical publications.

  • Own the creation of written materials, including press releases, data reports, briefing docs, communications plans and FAQs, blog posts, and other collateral.

Qualifications

You have:

  • 4-8 years relevant work experience at either a PR agency or on an in-house communications team.

  • Experience managing a variety of comms scenarios, especially product and feature launches, proactive storytelling, and rapid response.

  • A knack for uncovering stories, data, and other insights that can drive coverage and advance company narratives in the down-cycles between product launches or announcements.

  • Strong media relations skills that have driven coverage in national, local, business, tech, and vertical publications.

  • Ability to flex between working on projects solo and as part of a team.

  • Affinity for building partnerships with key internal stakeholders, including senior leadership.

  • A desire to help further our mission of economic empowerment through impactful storytelling.

  • Prolific writing and editing skills.

  • Curiosity, creative thinking, and a sense of humor.

  • An appreciation of the Oxford comma.
