Job Description
As Product Counsel, you’ll have a broad range of responsibilities providing legal guidance on product development projects. You are an experienced attorney with an interest in credit and small business lending who will help bring Square Capital’s creative financial products and services to market. You will partner with our product managers to develop new technologies while managing legal risk and ensuring regulatory compliance. You will also be called upon to manage and negotiate complex commercial relationships that contribute to our products’ success. As we expand our offerings, your ideas and contributions will make an immediate impact.
You will:
- Provide practical, risk-weighted legal guidance on many state and federal legal matters related to Square Capital products and services through all phases of product development
- Remain up-to-date on relevant regulations
- Draft product policies and disclosures, and implement related processes
- Provide ideas and insights into how Square Capital can work within the law to create amazing product experiences for its customers
- Partner with the broader legal team to share information about lending regulatory and product to support efficient and transparent legal support across the department
Qualifications
You have:
- 6+ years of combined, relevant experience in in-house legal departments, law firms, or governmental agencies
- Familiarity with the legal issues arising in launching products and advising on the legal and regulatory aspects of product development in the technology space - which in many cases may be matters of first impression. A specific interest or experience in credit and lending is preferred
- Familiarity and prior work with the following laws and regulations is preferred: such as the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), Truth in Lending Act (TILA)/Regulation Z, Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA)/Regulation B, Electronic Fund Transfer Act (EFTA)/Regulation E, Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and other laws affecting consumer and small business credit products
- Excellent commercial negotiation and drafting skills
- Fluency translating legal advice into applicable guidance for creative products and collaborators
- Organize, prioritize, and manage projects
- Work in an evolving and growing environment that is prone to changes
- Sound, practical business judgment, and creativity solving problems
- A JD and active membership in at least one state bar
