Company Description

We believe the economy is better when everyone has access. When everyone has room to grow. No one should be left out because the cost is too great or the technology too complex. We started with a little white credit card reader but haven’t stopped there. We’re empowering the independent electrician to send invoices, setting up the favorite food truck with a delivery option, helping the ice cream shop pay its employees, and giving the burgeoning coffee chain capital for a second, third, and fourth location. We’re here to help sellers of all sizes start, run, and grow their business—and helping them grow their business is good business for everyone.

Job Description

The Cloud Foundations team is a small, agile team working to make cloud use (primarily AWS) at Square more accessible, easier and safer. We're actively talking to other product focused teams, understanding what they want and building tooling that makes it possible for them to do what they want without us getting in the way. Our current focuses are bridging the gap between AWS Lambda and Square's existing fleet of microservices running in our data centers as well as making it easy for other engineers to extend their data center apps into AWS and augment them with things like ElasticSearch Service or DynamoDB. It's a hard problem to solve, but the company wide impact we have makes it all worth it.

As an engineer on Cloud Foundations, you will directly contribute to designing and building the infrastructure that other engineers at Square use in the cloud. Your impact will span across product and infrastructure engineering teams at Square, and you will help set the direction for Square's cloud use for many years to come. Along the way you will have plenty of opportunities to meet and interact with engineers from across the company working on vastly different problems and be in a position to help them all succeed.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop software that bridges Square systems to the cloud

  • Collaborate with security teams to improve the security posture of Square's cloud presence

  • Provide mentorship and design review support for engineering teams working with our technologies

  • Contribute to monitoring, stability, and security of existing tools

  • Participate in a team on-call rotation (quite painless - we work hard to make sure this is a breeze)

Qualifications

You Have:

  • At least 4 years software engineering experience

  • Familiarity with at least one cloud-based, infrastructure-as-a-service provider (ideally Amazon Web Services)

  • An interest in developing tooling for other engineers

  • Familiarity with any of the following programming languages: Ruby, Go, Python or Java

You will:

  • Shape how Square uses AWS and be able to tell the world about your work

  • Become a master of AWS infrastructure and organizational governance

  • Act as a force multiplier for software deployment and scale-up efforts by product engineering teams using cloud-based technologies in their solutions

  • Build strong verbal and written technical communication skills

  • Contribute to open source software projects
