Job Description

We are looking for a Director-level Design Lead to inspire our team and reimagine our portfolio of Square Add-On Apps: Square Marketing, Square Team Management, Square Loyalty, Square Gift Cards, and Square Buyer Experiences as part of the CPOS (Customer Powered Point of Sale) team. You and your team will lead design for these powerful products that help level the playing field and enable small businesses to compete with the giants. You will report to the Head of Design of CPOS, and manage a full-stack design team. You will promote a world-class design practice, partner with Product to establish and inspire our strategy, and ensure quality in execution. As a Design Director, you'll provide coaching and critique, champion the craft, and guide the career development of your design team, while creating a safe haven so designers can accomplish their best work.

You have:

  • 10+ years of relevant design experience in digital product design, 4+ years in people management
  • Experience managing product designers, and the ability to build, mentor, and motivate teams
  • Experience with diverse research methodologies to identify areas ripe for innovation, and de-risk ideas through discovery, insights, and testing
  • A diverse portfolio of work, personally designed and shipped, along with examples of work directed and delivered by your team
  • Experience making high-level goals tangible, to help teams hone in on solving the right problem, with the right experience design.  


  • Manage and inspire a team of ~4 designers, providing direction, setting the bar for the quality of the work, and inspiring design culture
  • Influence product strategy, in collaboration with your partner team Leads
  • Build relationships with cross-functional team members from Engineering, Product, Marketing, and Data Science and speak to product strategy, research, design goals, and tactical execution
  • Participate in design discipline-wide conversations and create deliverables to improve process, operations, and tools
