Federal Affairs Policy Lead

  • Full-time

Company Description

Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.

Job Description

As the Federal Affairs Policy Lead, you will develop and execute a strategy for engagement with federal lawmakers. You will deepen relationships, track essential legislative and regulatory issues, and will work cross-functionally to ensure Square’s vision of economic empowerment and access to financial systems is well represented at all levels of the federal government.

You will:

  • Develop and execute strategies to engage with federally elected officials, Congressional staff, third-party groups, trade associations, regulatory agencies, and the Administration on issues affecting Square
  • Find creative, proactive ways to engage with elected stakeholders to provide messaging on issues of importance
  • Maintain fluency on regulatory and policy issues including financial regulation, trade, tax, AI/machine learning, cryptocurrencies, intellectual property, and privacy
  • Build upon Square’s deep and continuing work on coronavirus response for our customers, including through the PPP program and through our engagement on speeding economic stimulus payments for the underserved
  • Advocate for Square and our customers on essential policy and political matters, and craft positions that will establish us as a thought leader and innovator
  • Drive processes to develop thoughtful, inclusive, and cohesive responses to incoming policy hurdles

Qualifications

You have:

  • 6+ years of experience in federal government relations, with a preference for experience in the financial services and technology sectors
  • Exemplary strategic instincts, a love of technology, and passion for Square's purpose
  • A demonstrated track record of successfully navigating complex policy issues
  • Excellent interpersonal, communications, and advocacy skills; an ability to explain complicated issues and policy positions to any audience
  • Entrepreneurial style and comfort working in fast-paced environments
  • Impeccable ethics and high integrity
  • Curiosity, creative thinking, and a sense of humor
  • An appreciation for the Oxford comma
