Senior Software Engineering Manager, Customer Data Platform

  • San Francisco, CA
  • Full-time
  • Alternate Location: New York, United States
  • Position open to remote: Yes

Company Description

Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.

Job Description

The Automation organization enables and measures the unified customer journey, intelligently empowering customers through Square's ecosystem of products. Customer Data Platform (CDP) Engineering is an essential team within the Automation organization that has two foci: First, building a state-of-the-art in-house CDP for collecting, unifying, and connecting customer data with applications. Second, building products and capabilities (e.g., for personalization, segmentation, data privacy management) that allow partners to easily integrate with CDP and help them use customer data to build remarkable solutions. CDP Engineering is an established team that has already made a great impact on Square's data infrastructure and is aspiring to transform Square into a truly data company.

We are looking for a senior technology leader (just like you!) to lead the building of the Customer Data Platform and first party applications, help shape our technical vision, establish platform architecture, and further grow the team of experienced engineering managers and individual contributors. You will use your engineering leadership and experience with data platforms to improve Square's data capabilities to grow our go-to-market strategy.

You will:

  • Be the expert in engineering data platforms, understand our data landscape and how to optimize it, design incentives for adoption of the customer data platform (CDP) and develop remarkable products and use cases based on the platform
  • Guide long-term thinking and progress in an ambiguous and rapidly-changing space
  • Collaborate with Product, Senior Leadership, and your peers, to develop the strategy for the future of data at Square
  • Hire and develop engineers and engineering managers, helping them grow and guide the roadmap
  • Develop efficient processes, ensuring the engineering team is operating with high velocity, ownership, and self-accountability

Qualifications

You have:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline
  • 10 years of engineering experience (or equivalent)
  • 5 years of experience building data platforms
  • 5 years of experience managing engineers and data professionals
  •  Experience with data infrastructure
  • Experience with public clouds and related solutions
  • Experience with marketing automation, advertising technologies for experimentation, personalization, attribution, and analytics
  • Great team member management and collaboration with product, data, and marketing professionals

Even better:

  • Experience leading and developing managers / people leaders
  • Experience building a customer data platform (CDP)
  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and related solutions
  • Startup experience: technical founder/co-founder, growth, or data roles
