Job Description

The Automation organization enables and measures the unified customer journey, intelligently empowering customers through Square's ecosystem of products. Communication Platform & Infrastructure is an essential team within the Automation organization that has two direct foci: First, build, maintain and scale notifications infrastructure that makes it easy for teams at Square to contact customers via email, SMS, and push notification channels. Second, connect the ecosystem to Square's customers with an omnichannel Communication Platform. 

We are looking for an experienced technology leader (just like you!) to lead the expansion of the Communications Platform and foundational notifications infrastructure. You will help shape our technical vision, establish platform architecture, and further grow the team of experienced technical leads, engineering managers, and individual contributors. You will use your engineering leadership and experience with communication products to make communication between Square and our customers scalable, easy, effective, and intelligent.

You will:

  • Be the expert in engineering communication products and infrastructure, our messaging ecosystem and how to optimize it, and lead related development efforts

  • Develop a universal API and user interfaces to promote adoption by our users and build intelligent products and use cases based on the platform

  • Collaborate with Product, Senior Leadership, and your peers, to develop the strategy for the future of communication at Square and improve lifecycle marketing

  • Hire and develop managers, engineers and tech leads, helping them grow and guide the roadmap

  • Develop efficient processes, ensuring the engineering team is operating with high velocity, ownership, and self-accountability


You have:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline (or equivalent experience)

  • 10+ years of engineering experience (or equivalent)

  • 5+ years of experience managing engineers; 3+ years managing managers

  • Experience with continually increasing scale of traffic and data

  • Experience with communication products and infrastructure, e.g. APNS/FCM, ISPs, or SMS gateways

  • Experience with public clouds and related solutions, e.g. AWS, GCP


Even better:

  • Experience building a Communications Platform

  • Experience with growth marketing/engagement platforms (e.g., Iterable, Braze). 

  • Startup experience as a technical founder/co-founder or growth roles
