State Public Policy Lead

  • Full-time

Company Description

Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.

Job Description

Our Policy team is a diverse group of quick-witted, self-starting, and intellectually-curious people. Square is looking for an extraordinary professional to join the Americas Policy function. You will report to the Head of State and Local Public Policy and in support of a nationwide effort, you will develop a strategy for engagement with policymakers in a group of key states. You will deepen relationships, track legislative and regulatory issues, and ensure Square's vision of economic empowerment and access to financial systems is well represented at all levels of state government in those states.

You Will:

  • Develop strategies to engage with state-level elected and appointed officials, legislative and executive staff, regulatory agencies, third-party groups, and industry partners on issues affecting Square

  • Find creative ways to engage with partners to deliver essential messaging and policy positions on issues of importance

  • Maintain fluency on several regulatory and policy issues across several sectors including financial services, technology, consumer protection, tax, employment, and data privacy

  • Be an advocate for Square and our customers on key policy and political matters, and craft positions for us, which will establish us as an expert and innovator

  • Track important legislative and regulatory initiatives, which impact Square and its community of sellers

  • Drive company wide processes to develop thoughtful, inclusive, and cohesive responses to incoming policy hurdles

  • Work with and help manage outside consultants

  • Help with coalition building through third-party groups and partnerships

Qualifications

You Have:

  • 5 years of experience in U.S. state government relations, with a strong preference for experience in the financial services and technology sectors

  • Strategic instincts, a love of technology, and passion for Square's purpose

  • Experience successfully navigating complex policy issues

  • Excellent interpersonal, communications, and advocacy skills; an ability to effectively explain complicated issues and policy positions to any audience

  • Impeccable ethics and high integrity

  • Curiosity, creative thinking, and a sense of humor

  • Strong writing skills and an appreciation for the Oxford comma
