Job Description

We're seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our Embedded Software Platform team. The team provides the foundational firmware for all of Square's hardware. They work with NFC, digital/analog payments and bluetooth along with exploring any future IC's or custom Square ASIC we would like to incorporate into our products. The team strives to build reusable, well tested, code to be consumed by other embedded teams within hardware and partner teams such as Mobile, Factory or ASIC.

This position will report to the Software Platform Lead within our hardware organization

You Will:

  • Lead a team of Embedded engineers working on complex technical problems, providing guidance on both technical experience and career growth.

  • Plan yearly and quarterly goals to ensure the team is aligned with merchant needs and new features we want to release

  • Forecast future work and plan resourcing accordingly. Having a hand in the hiring process and ensuring good team balance of skills and seniority

  • Promote frequent planning, working with the product and program managers across the Hardware organization

  • Work with teams across hardware, mobile and server to ensure quality products and synchronization of goals

  • Work with product analysts to establish and track metrics used to signal stability as we ship changes

Role Location:
We want employees to reside where they feel most creative and productive. You will be part of an org that works across Pacific, Mountain, Central, and Eastern time zones.

In this role, you and your direct team will be based in the Pacific and Eastern time zones. This role is open to all people who can be effective partners with this team, including sharing typical working hours.

Qualifications

You Have:

  • Relevant BA/BS degree or equivalent industry experience (6+ years).

  • 2+ years experience directly managing engineers (including feedback, performance, hiring, and career guidance).

  • Proven ability to provide technical mentorship and guidance to your team.

  • Experience working with other engineering leaders and cross-functional team members.

  • Experience in the embedded software space, contributing to hardware programs that have shipped.

You may also have (but not required):

  • Experience managing relationships with vendors.

  • Experience working with engineering teams of multiple disciplines (i.e. Electrical Engineering, Mobile, Server).

  • Experience creating reusable platform components and APIs designed for other developers.
