Software Engineering Manager, Data Security

  • Full-time

Company Description

Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.

Job Description

Data Security is core to Square's success. Square strives to make the basics of running a business easy for our sellers so that they can instead focus on building and growing their business. The Data Security Engineering team similarly aims to make it easy for our engineering teams to protect sensitive data throughout its lifecycle so that Square can ship remarkable products. We achieve these goals through developing data security education and policies, preventative guardrails, and secure, convenient tooling.

We are looking for a Security Software Engineering Manager to help lead the newly formed Data Security Engineering team. In this leadership role, you will develop the individuals on the team and guide engineering projects that reduce the burden and risks associated with collecting and using sensitive data.

You will:

  • Partner with teams across the security, engineering, and counsel organizations to understand and identify opportunities for improving the security of our users' data
  • Develop the data security strategy to allow engineers across Square to ship secure products and features
  • Build an outstanding team of remarkable talent and invest in their careers through ongoing development
  • Use technical expertise to cultivate pragmatic engineering decision-making and sustain high engineering standards on the team
  • Develop efficient processes to ensure the engineering team is operating with high velocity

  • Build relationships with their counterparts, including other engineering managers, product managers, and security partners
  • Excel at building engineering teams that are productive, collaborative and inclusive
  • Are committed to continuous improvement of themselves, their teammates, and Square's software
