Job Description

Restaurants today operate in an increasingly dynamic landscape, and we're building a modern product ecosystem to support this.  The Restaurants team at Square empowers Food & Drink businesses of all kinds to start, run, and grow their businesses through advanced workflows, specialized products, business insights, and inclusion in the greater Square ecosystem.  In everything we build, we focus on efficiency, automation, and reliability: themes of paramount importance in a fast-paced environment where great hospitality is key.

The Restaurants team is looking for an experienced manager to lead a new product development team, focused on helping restaurant owners and managers start using the Square for Restaurants ecosystem to effectively run their business.

Square has developed a suite of products that work in concert to meet the needs of all kinds of restaurants, as well as integrations with third-party tools that are crucial to restaurants' operations. The breadth of that ecosystem presents challenges beyond the scope of any one product. This new team will focus on improving our customers' experience from raising awareness of Square's offerings, through product choice and evaluation, to solution configuration and integration across the ecosystem. In addition, this team will also be central to launching our solutions in new markets.

You will:

  • Help customers in new international markets get started with the Square for Restaurants ecosystem

  • Build new ways for our products to support and seamlessly integrate into marketing initiatives

  • Address key pain points for restaurant owners and managers, as they discover and begin using the best combination of Square and third-party products for their unique set of needs.

  • Lead a full-stack team of 6-7 server, web, and mobile developers.

  • Grow and develop your team through hiring, coaching, and team leadership. You will have a strong start, with a starting team of amazing engineers and a growth-oriented culture.

  • Lead projects with direct impact on key success metrics for Square for Restaurants, and do it by putting critical tools into the hands of restaurant owners and setting them up for success.

  • Closely collaborate with design, product management, and marketing partners to define goals and reach them together.


You are:

  • Experienced in coaching and developing engineers through senior levels, and growing engineering teams through hiring and career development. 

  • Maintains a customer focus and applies that focus at all times to product definition, design, engineering, and operations. Your empathy for the customer and collaboration on all aspects of product development will be key to our customers' success with our products.

  • Prepared to support your team with engineering insight as well as people leadership. You will be called upon to advise engineers on design and process; represent your engineering team to leadership and partners; and ensure excellent technical output from your team.

  • Eager to collaborate closely with cross-functional partners and peer EMs, as partners with shared goals and openness to each others' ideas.

Technologies that will be used by your team:

  • Web development in Ember.js

  • Server-side development, primarily in Java in a Square service stack

  • Mobile development on Android (Kotlin) and iOS (Swift)

  • Thorough automated testing on all stacks (unit, integration, and snapshot, as appropriate)
