Software Engineering Manager, Orders Foundation

  • Full-time

Company Description

Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.

Job Description

Square’s purpose is economic empowerment; since the company’s beginning, we have been helping numerous people start and manage their own businesses. During the pandemic, many small businesses struggled, as they scramble to adapt to going online to reach their customers.

The Orders team has a mission to enable sellers to reach their customers anywhere, and provide a seamless experience to the customers (e.g. buy online, pickup in store) that today might only be available from much larger merchants. We have already started rolling out to a small percentage of sellers, with a goal of expanding this to all sellers. Furthermore, we strive to build an Orders platform that empowers both teams at Square and an ecosystem of third-party developers to support our sellers in this bright future ahead.

This is a massive undertaking with huge challenges. We have a wide range of sellers with many different needs, and to meet those needs, we work with many stakeholder teams at Square in navigating dependencies and intertwined technical / product ambiguities. As we scale to more sellers, we also have new obstacles to overcome on performance and reliability. The team has been growing rapidly, and that has brought its own scalability challenges, so we are re-examining our rituals to support the team.

You will:

  • Join an organization that invests deeply in supporting / growing its leaders. We will support your growth and expect you to do the same for your team.

  • Play a critical role in an essential pillar of Square’s multi-year strategy

  • Interact with senior executives in the company, and influence leaders and peers across the broader organization

  • Be responsible for growing a distributed team, hiring effectively, and developing rituals for the team to support its growing scale

  • Work with cross-functional leaders in Product Management, Program Management, and Design

  • Navigate complex technical / product / organizational challenges, grow your expertise in this area, and mentor / support the next generation of leaders

If you share our passion for this mission, and are eager to tackle these complex challenges, please reach out to us!

Qualifications

You have:

  • Track record of leading multiple software development team projects to successful completion. Experience leading projects that are part of a larger multi-team effort is a plus.

  • Successfully influenced other teams without authority and can guide complex discussions across multiple stakeholders to resolution

  • Experience in defining or influencing the team culture / process (“how we work”)

  • Prior experience managing people, while desirable, is not required; the org is growing rapidly, and we can adjust the scope of your role based on your level of experience in people management

  • Domain expertise in scalable, distributed systems is required; knowledge of public cloud systems such as Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platform is a plus

  • Shown the ability to learn quickly / adapt to changing environments when given appropriate support and mentorship

  • Strong communication skills and effectively adapts the level of details you give to your audience

  • Demonstrated willingness to prioritize the mission of the broader organization ahead of your team’s or your own
