Company Description

We believe everyone should be able to participate and thrive in the economy. So we’re building tools that make commerce easier and more accessible to all. We started with a little white credit card reader but haven’t stopped there. Our new reader helps our sellers accept chip cards and NFC payments, and our Cash app lets people pay each other back instantly. We’re empowering the independent electrician to send invoices, setting up the favorite food truck with a delivery option, helping the ice cream shop pay its employees, and giving the burgeoning coffee chain capital for a second, third, and fourth location. Let’s shorten the distance between having an idea and making a living from it. We’re here to help sellers of all sizes start, run, and grow their business—and helping them grow their business is good business for everyone.

Job Description

Good decision-making is only possible when you have all the data available, along with the right tools and systems to process and analyze that data. The Data Infrastructure team works on systems handling hundreds of terabytes daily, and plays a pivotal role in driving the Square data ecosystem by managing core infrastructure and providing core data pipeline services.

You are an experienced software engineer, ready to bring your skills towards building (modern / next generation) data solutions. As an engineer on the Data Infrastructure team, you will:

  • Write performant, clean, modern applications and services in Java or Python, possibly migrating functionality from existing Ruby/Rails services.
  • Improve operations and tooling around Kafka, leveraging open source software as appropriate to ensure we can continue to scale.

  • Modernize the application event logging infrastructure, and move it to a streaming architecture.

  • Build out new data management capabilities like granular data access, more sophisticated data security policies, and improving data discovery and documentation and overall data governance.

  • Mentor fellow teammates in different ways: implementation and code review, architecture and design, devops and operational best practices, and in any other way where you have interest and expertise.

  • Be self-driven in identifying and documenting feature gaps, and designing and implementing solutions to them.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of software development experience.

  • Strong expertise with Python or Java.

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent practical experience.

  • Bonus: Kafka experience, either as a client or as an operator.

  • Bonus: Ruby/Rails experience.

  • Bonus: Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, or AWS experience.

  • Bonus: a desire for leadership responsibilities, such as a tech lead.
