Electrical Component Engineer

  • Full-time

Company Description

Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.

Job Description

Our hardware team builds the tangible connection to all that is Square. From the Square Card Reader for NFC and chip cards, Square Stand, Square Terminal and Register, our family of devices is growing - and this is only the beginning. As we introduce more and more of our products to the world, our hardware footprint continues to expand. Square's mission demands increasingly complex and numerous electrical designs including integration of multiple payment technologies, RF and near-field communication (NFC), batteries, displays, multiple CPUs, and more. The designs include hundreds or even thousands of electrical components that exist across a plethora of internal tools and require careful management. We are looking for a passionate Electrical Component Engineer who craves these challenges.

You will:

  • Work with the Electrical Engineering team to select components, optimizing for performance, availability, cost, environmental and manufacturing requirements
  • Review electrical BOMs and schematics to ensure components follow requirements listed above
  • Requests, review, and approve Engineering Change Orders for electronic component management
  • Audit components stored in PLM system (Arena) and CAD libraries (Altium), ensuring descriptions and parametric information are accurate and aligned
  • Evaluate all process change notices (PCNs) from electronics parts suppliers and initiate appropriate internal actions
  • Manage component EOL and successful transition to qualified replacement candidates (PRQs)
  • Work with Global Supply Management team to evaluate and reduce supply chain risk by sourcing and approving alternate parts
  • Manage a set of rules for component paper qualification
  • Support risk purchase approvals for NPI builds and mass production
  • Approve component specifications from suppliers
  • Coordinate with engineering teams and suppliers during root cause and failure analysis activities

Qualifications

You have:

  • A BS degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience as an Electrical Component Engineer
  • The ability to balance technical and business criteria requirements
  • Experience with PLM tools
  • The ability to read a BOM and schematic

Even Better:

  • Experience with Arena PLM and Altium Designer
  • Experience shipping high-volume products (1MM+)
