Software Engineer, Frameworks & Services

  • San Francisco, CA, USA
  • Employees can work remotely
  • Full-time

Company Description

Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a smartphone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Terminal, Square Appointments, Square Online Store, and more. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.

Job Description

As a Software Engineer on Frameworks & Services, you would join a full-stack team responsible for providing service frameworks, experiments, feature flags, device configuration, and other third party integrations within our applications. Engineering teams across Square rely upon these offerings to rapidly develop new features, safely release to production, and monitor analytics gathered from their applications. This team reports into the Developer Empowerment organization which ensures software development at Square is not only fast and efficient, but delightful.

You will:

  • Identify, scope, and lead complex, full-stack projects with wide impact across the company
  • Maintain and improve service frameworks used by Java, Ruby, and Go programmers to build back end services
  • Build or integrate frameworks enabling experimentation and safe release of new features into web and mobile applications
  • Translate functional and technical requirements into detailed architecture and design
  • Operate and enhance highly scalable microservices consumed by millions of devices across several international markets
  • Collaborate with multiple stakeholders across the company including product, design, legal, support, and other engineering teams
  • Provide design reviews for engineering teams across Square working with our frameworks

Qualifications

  • Ability to breakdown complex projects into components or milestones that can easily be picked up by other engineers
  • Demonstrated collaboration with co-workers on cross-functional teams and in other locations

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or an equivalent degree), and 2 or more years of professional software development experience

Technologies we use and teach:

  • Java, Ruby, Go
  • gRPC, Protocol Buffers, JSON
