Senior Software Engineer, Risk Tools

  • Full-time

Company Description

Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.

Job Description

Risk Engineering works to protect Square and our customers from fraud and payment disputes. We keep our customers safe while tens of billions of dollars flow through Square annually. To do this, we build systems to detect and respond to potential fraud threats, provide outstanding tools to agents for investigating risky events, and give our customers seamless web and mobile experiences to manage and fight payment disputes. Our mission is to protect Square, protect our customers, and make a complicated and sometimes painful process understandable to all.

As a Software Engineer on Risk Tools, you will design, implement, and own the seller-facing tools that allow Square’s customers to navigate financial risks they may face. You will help build beautiful customer experiences that externalize our risk management expertise and empower our customers to make their own risk-reward trade-offs. If you love delivering software that improves the lives of business owners, we want to work with you!

As a Software Engineer on the team you will:

  • Split your time between working on the frontend of our seller risk tools and our backend APIs and services

  • Scope and develop great user experiences in both external and internal web applications

  • Work cross-functionally with our product, design, analytics, data science, and operations to develop new features and improve existing products

Qualifications

  • Relevant Bachelor's degree (or equivalent practical experience) plus 5 years of relevant industry (or additional academic) experience.

  • Flexibility to learn and work across our team’s entire tech stack

  • Passion for building products that are beautiful outside and inside – from their user experience to their robust and elegant design

  • A sense of customer empathy and the desire to influence product direction

  • The desire to work collaboratively, whether in person (when safe to do so), over video, or asynchronously through online tools

Technologies we use and teach:

  • Javascript, Ember, Sass, and other web-app frameworks

  • Ruby on Rails

  • Java

  • MySQL
