Company Description

Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.

Job Description

Asset management is a core tenet of Information Security, traditionally captured through hardware and software asset management. As the company grows, data increasingly becomes an important asset that requires active tracking and management in order to ensure we are building and maintaining appropriate data protection.

As the technical lead, you will define the broad direction and future of our Data Inventory Platform, which is focused on building out and continuously improving the accuracy of our data cataloging as our systems continue to evolve in number and complexity. You will operate on the critical path of surfacing data risk on all Square products and business units, and will have a direct impact on the success of security and privacy of data at Square. In this role, you will closely work with many teams across Square, including other teams within security, as well as platform engineering, product engineering, data science, and counsel.

You should expect to:

  • Collaborate with leaders across security, platform, data science, and counsel to translate data visibility requirements into technical solutions

  • Design, develop, and test high-quality services that support long-term data infrastructure and visibility needs across the organization

  • Set broad direction and vision, influence engineering and business strategy, and establish practices to efficiently and effectively address data security and privacy needs across Square’s engineering ecosystem

  • Provide mentorship and reviews for engineering teams working with the Data Inventory Platform

  • Work with the engineering manager to oversee the success of the team's projects and deliver quantifiable results

Some qualifications you may have:

  • 8+ years of data infrastructure or backend software development, preferably some combination of both!

  • Excellent software engineering and software architecture knowledge and the ability to provide technical mentorship and guidance

  • Engineering experience in building services for high-throughput data processing and classification (e.g. log processing, schema classification, etc.)

  • Experience with cloud-based data warehouses

  • Ability to cut across services, infrastructure, or frameworks in novel ways to achieve security and privacy goals

  • Strong communication skills. You’re adept at understanding complex technical concepts and helping your team make decisions to move forward, as well as communicating those decisions upwards to security and engineering cross-functional leaders

As a bonus, you might also have experience or interest in:

  • Engineering experience in data inventory, catalog, discovery, lineage and/or classification systems at scale

  • Developing or maintaining services or processes to meet data governance needs

  • Identifying and surfacing data inventory/catalog anomalies to incident response teams

  • Designing novel ways to understand and surface data flow, access control, and risk

Technologies we use and teach:

  • Java, Golang, Python, Javascript

  • Snowflake, BigQuery and MySQL

  • Airflow

  • Kafka, Kinesis, Pubsub

  • Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, Envoy

  • On-Prem, AWS, GCP
