Block is hiring a new Head of Litigation! Do you care about empowering businesses, sellers, and individuals who have historically faced barriers to participation in the economy? Good, because our litigation team supports ALL of our current business units worldwide: Square, Cash App, TIDAL, Spiral, Afterpay, and TBD. As Head of Litigation at Block you will work on issues as diverse as payments, music streaming, Bitcoin, buy now pay later, and de-fi – perhaps all in the same day! You will manage and work side by side with your team of stellar litigators and legal professionals who anticipate, evaluate, strategize, fight, and resolve litigation and pre-litigation disputes of all flavors. This is the right job for a leader with significant managerial experience, strong executive communication skills, keen judgment, and the desire to become a subject matter expert by digging deep into new areas of the law. You will report into the Head of Litigation, Employment and IP.
You will:
Oversee our portfolio of litigation matters worldwide, including regulatory investigations
Motivate and advocate for your team of attorneys and legal professionals
Establish policies and practices that ensure efficient resolution of litigation matters and allow the team to grow along with the company
Monitor litigation developments relevant to our varied products and business units
Manage outside counsel to ensure we receive expert legal advice within budget
Work with product teams to find and mitigate litigation risks and communicate practical advice to non-lawyers
Collaborate with and act as a resource to our Counsel colleagues on the Comms, Policy, Compliance, M&A, and Product teams
Qualifications
You have:
J.D. and admission to the bar
12+ years of litigation experience at a law firm, in-house, or governmental agency
Experience managing attorneys and legal professionals, in-house preferred
Procedural experience including discovery, motion practice, oral arguments, trials, proactive litigation, mediation, and settlement negotiations
Broad litigation subject matter experience including for example, commercial class actions, IP, antitrust, privacy, securities, regulatory investigations/enforcement
Flexibility and ability to pivot and adapt to changing priorities in a constantly evolving company
Ability to evaluate risk and exposure, calibrate it to company needs, and communicate to peers and executives alike
Curiosity and desire to learn, learn, learn
