Job Description

Block is searching for a Legal Operations Lead who will work directly with senior legal leadership and will lead and continue to build and scale our Legal Operations capabilities. You are a people manager and a collaborative team player who is passionate about creating operational systems and practices that inspire excellence, enhance efficiencies and promote transparency and partnership across all levels at Block. We are looking for someone who is process-oriented and has a practical mindset and will change along with the organizational needs. You will create, streamline, and implement processes and systems that help us provide high-quality legal work. You will develop, implement and improve scalable technologies and processes to meet our needs globally. This role will be strategic and tactical and will report to our Head of Corporate Legal.

You will:

  • Help design and manage the strategy for the Legal Ops team, including annual goals, objectives, key results, and other metrics

  • Manage Block's current team of legal operations professionals and continue to build the team to support and scale the legal ops function to support Block's growing business

  • Develop and implement appropriate metrics and benchmarking through data analytics to measure the legal team's performance both within and outside the department

  • Develop data visualization solutions to report on department and organizational metrics

  • Use analytical reporting to analyze and improve opportunities

  • Manage legal budget, in partnership with the Finance team to monitor performance against budgets and forecasts, and identify spending trends, potential cost savings, and efficiency opportunities

  • Collaborate with people at all levels of the organization and build relationships within the Legal team, and with team members including Finance, IT, Infosec, People, and other operational teams

  • Work with Block's eBilling coordinator to implement and manage vendor cost reduction strategies, including rate negotiations, onboarding and offboarding, payment processes, and governance of billing guidelines and to support legal vendor diversity efforts, reflecting Block's principles of promoting inclusion and diversity

  • Support Block's legal operations technology manager in building Block's legal technology projects such as e-billing and matter management, our contracts management system, ediscovery and other internal resources and automation capabilities

  • Promote the Legal team's professional development and brand, including maintaining compliance with State Bar and CLE requirements

  • Partner directly with senior legal leadership to prioritize and allocate resources and to help manage day-to day operations, including reporting, budgeting, and financial management

  • Present reports to our Chief Legal Officer on the team's financial budget and outlook, resource prioritization, and other Legal Ops programs

  • Support the legal team's new hire onboarding processes

  • Be a strategic advisor for the Counsel leadership team, providing guidance on financial management, resource allocation, and team development

Qualifications

You have:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in Legal Ops, including managing legal operational programs, projects, and processes

  • Experience managing finances, including experience with analytics, headcount prioritization and budget management

  • Experience managing a team, including strategic planning, career development, and resource allocation

  • A team mindset and has experience working within a growing legal team and with members at all levels throughout the company

  • Experience in technology change management, project management, business process management and system implementation

  • In-house experience with a global company

  • Willingness to ramp up on new technologies and learn them in-depth
