Founded in July 2021, TBD is Block’s newest business unit. Our team is building an open source developer platform and primitives that will help unlock the next wave of innovation in financial services — which we believe will be decentralized, permissionless, and non-custodial. As such, we will eschew custodial and traditional centralized approaches — and instead, shape Block’s strategy in building for a non-custodial world, embracing the decentralized and democratized nature of crypto. The offerings we build will provide developers, institutions, and individuals with the capabilities needed to access this decentralized future. Our vision is to leverage bitcoin and other blockchain technologies to reinvent the global financial system in an open and permissionless way to further Block’s mission of economic empowerment and financial inclusion for all, with a global focus.
We are looking for a Regulatory Counsel to join TBD, Square's newest business unit. You have experience managing complex and technical regulatory matters, seeing around corners to spot challenges and opportunity, working cross-functionally to get exceptional outcomes, and advocating on behalf of issues at the regulatory intersection of financial services and technology such as decentralized finance (DeFi), cryptocurrencies, payments, remittances, as well as new and transformative financial products.
You are comfortable with ambiguity, and have deep experience with regulators in the financial services space. You are a regulatory counsel who has an active interest in blockchain and decentralized technologies, and is passionate about building a new financial system that can bring the benefits of crypto technologies to mainstream audiences.
You will report directly to the General Counsel of TBD.
Advise on multiple regulatory matters affecting TBD's initiatives both inside and outside of the U.S.
Keep the business up to speed on how to offer remarkable product solutions to our customers that meet regulatory requirements
Identify, summarize, and analyze the impact of new and proposed applicable rules and regulations
Represent TBD with external audiences (policymakers, regulators, third party groups, etc) on complex regulatory matters
Oversee the licensing application and management function for all applicable jurisdictions
Identify risk areas and develop systems, policies, and procedures to manage and mitigate them
Partner with TBD business colleagues to better understand their development priorities and regulatory needs
Quickly scale the learning curve on new subject areas across domains and technologies, including blockchain, crypto technologies, and decentralized identity infrastructure
10+ years experience at a law firm, financial services, payments, fintech and/or technology desirable
Experience with FinTech, crypto, payment and banking issues
Experience handling regulatory and enforcement matters and prior relationships with relevant regulators at the SEC, CFTC, FinCEN and other relevant state and federal agencies
JD and an active membership in a bar
Fluency in translating regulatory requirements and legal advice into actionable guidance for business and product teams
Technical savvy: particularly important to have experience working directly with senior engineers and engineering management. High degree of comfort and fluency with computers and technology, and understanding of how technology is applied to business and regulatory problems
Entrepreneurial spirit: You're a self-starter with flexible skills
