Job Description

You'll be working on the Merchant side of Afterpay's business, supporting SMB (small/medium businesses) throughout their lifecycle with Afterpay - from applying to joining to transacting to growing, we cover it all. Our team supports the end-user applications as well as the microservices behind the scenes - this is a full-stack, product-focused, user-facing role. You'll work with a smart set of team members who are very motivated to keep learning and continuing to grow each other in a supportive way.

Qualifications

What you'll bring:

  • 5+ years of full-stack software engineering experience

  • Strong proficiency in at least one of our core languages (TypeScript, Python, or Kotlin)

  • Comfort providing leadership as an individual contributor, and driving best practices on a team

  • Ability to lead by example and actively address problems you identify, and give & receive feedback with regard for emotional and technical concerns

  • Desire for a collaborative engineering culture - meaning, you're comfortable pairing with others and you actively enjoy teaching concepts, technologies, and best practices to other engineers (especially those who are less experienced!)

  • Kindness, maturity, and empathy for your colleagues and end-users

Additional Information

Onboarding Process:

Just because you're experienced, that doesn't mean we expect you to hit the ground running! You'll have a gentle, intentional onboarding experience and will have time to learn and grow comfortable with our systems, processes, and people.

Within 1 month, you'll:

  • Get assigned and set up recurring meetings with your onboarding mentor

  • Learn about the business and dive into the inner workings of our platform and our codebase

  • Tackle your first ticket by committing changes and deploying your code to production

  • Help the team by performing code reviews

Within 3 months, you'll:

  • Establish strong working relationships with your peers and leaders, practicing transparency and visibility in your progress against areas of focus

  • Join the on-call rotation and help the team pay down technical debt and improve reliability

  • Gain a more robust understanding of the needs of the product and become more comfortable with diagnosing problems

  • Deliver on your first project and help iterate on meaningful customer outcomes

  • Solicit feedback from your peers, including other engineers and teammates in your product/design team, and support the team through thoughtful feedback

Within 6 months, you'll:

  • Be equipped to ship large features and improvements with minimal guidance or support from other team members

  • Fortify relationships with cross functional team members as well as broaden your connections across the organization

  • Represent the team and be a significant influence in the overall vision and long term goals for the team and product

  • Grow into a subject matter expert in an area that interests you, and leveraging this ownership to make a significant impact to our team and business

  • Become a partner to engineering leadership as you help level up the team and continually improve the reliability and observability of our system, especially by advocating and identifying technical debt or impediments that slow down the team's ability to deliver code to production
