Job Description

Square Financial Services, Inc. (the "Bank" or "SFS") was approved for an industrial bank charter by the Utah Department of Financial Services ("UDFI") and deposit insurance from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation ("FDIC") in March 2020. The Bank opened in March 2021 as a Utah corporation and has since been delivering on Block's mission of economic empowerment by helping small business owners and underserved communities across the United States.

SFS has launched a search for a Bank Controller ("Controller"), reporting to the CFO of Square Financial Services. You will manage the accounting and control activities and financial reporting to the Bank's Board of Directors, parent company, bank regulators and to external constituents. You will report directly to the CFO and will lead the Bank's growing accounting team and aid in the career development of the staff through coaching and by providing feedback. You will also provide operational and technical accounting expertise to ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, rules, bank regulation and laws.

This position can sit in any Block office or be full-time remote from any US state with the exception of Alaska. 

You Will:

  • Establish a well documented (auditable) financial accounting and reporting framework to ensure compliance with US GAAP and Regulatory Reporting Requirements.
  • Develop standard operating processes for the financial close process, including procedures for manual journal entries, reconciliations, controls and other important financial activities.
  • Design, deploy and maintain a financial control environment including proper documentation with a focus on Bank specific accounting and reporting controls and Sarbanes-Oxley ("SOX") controls.
  • Prepare standalone financial statements and disclosures for the Bank legal entity, compliant with US GAAP and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Oversee the preparation of the Bank's Call Report and other required regulatory filings in compliance with Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council's ("FFIEC") statutory requirements.
  • Support corporate accounting teams by preparing financial schedules and footnote disclosures about the Bank for the consolidated Block, Inc. U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC") reporting and disclosure filings.
  • Oversee the research and implementation of technical accounting and reporting requirements for all products and features.
  • Review and monitor key account reconciliations and reconciliations procedures.
  • Assist us with compliance issues related to banking regulations (Regulation W, Sections 23A & 23B)
  • Help plan, budgeting and studying bank financial results that impact all business decisions.
  • Partner with cross functional teams and partners (i.e. Bank Treasury, Corporate Finance and Strategy, Operations, Data Science, Capital Markets, etc.).
  • Collaborate with product managers and engineering teams to establish automated subledger accounting rules and to design necessary system reporting.
  • Manage deliverables and audit and exam requests from internal and external auditing functions and work with auditors and bank regulatory examiners.
  • Recruit and lead a team of accounting professionals in the day-to-day execution of accounting policies and controls.

Qualifications

You Have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related; MBA or CPA preferred.
  • 12 or more years of progressive accounting experience in financial services or a related industry.
  • Detailed understanding and implementation of a control environment including SOX controls experience.
  • Experience preparing financial statements and related disclosures.
  • Experience with BlackLine and Oracle Financials or similar ERP.
  • Public Accounting experience.
  • Public company SEC reporting experience.
  • Technical accounting knowledge and public company best practices.
  • Bank start-up experience.
  • FFIEC regulatory reporting preparation experience.
  • Direct experience with bank regulatory examiners.
